I have absolutely no experience of mystery quilts except the one that has come from the American Quilter's Society this past monthhttp://www.quiltviews.com/new-online...:08:50, and on that one they specified the full list of colours/values and quantities to be cut in the first week. http://www.quiltviews.com/wp-content...0/hahn_pt1.pdf Could it be that your quilt Bee hasn't started off like this, and could you ask whoever is running it for this information?

For me, that's the fun (and stress) of a mystery quilt. When you choose the fabric, you don't know which fabrics will be next to each other. So you just have to trust the pattern designer and do your best with the information given to you. It can be freeing, but there is the possibility that you won't like your final quilt. I've made 3 mystery quilts so far. The first one I loved. The second I found a bit boring, but changing the border and adding quilting helped. The third is a bit too colorful (I was expecting that, but wanted to see what happened when I pushed the envelope), but I'm planning to add some applique to see if I can tone it down a bit. I'm in the middle of my 4th right now and think this one will be pretty cool because it seems to be a more complicated pattern than the others.

Good luck and enjoy the process!

When I did my first mystery quilt someone told me to not worry about color--worry about value--I did know how many different colors I was going to need.

Concentrate of 'light, medium, dark'. That way it'll work whatever colours and fabrics people choose. And also add a little advice if it's suitable (or not) for directional fabrics and/or large prints.

There is a book about mystery quilts. Can't remember the exact title, but Amazon should bring up the details. I'm too tired to look for the details. We found out today that the government inspectors (Ofsted for the Brits here) will inspect my school on Wednesday and Thursday. It's headless chickens time and almost everybody is flapping. Should be a fun week.
