Hey, Lynn, let's hi-jack this thread for a minute! We are both 59 and relatively new grandmothers. Your little Fia is gorgeous, and our little Eva has just started crawling.

And back to Crazy work -
You don't have to start with a pentagon if you don't want to. Just cut a backing fabric to the size of 'patch' or item you want, then cover it with pieces of fabric, pin & stitch down.

Here is a dolls skirt I made for my 'O' Level Embroidery folder (about 1980). Several years before that it had been an actual crazy work skirt that my sister had made and wore (I was 'encouraged' to help cut the patches & was even allowed to help place them on the backing fabric). It was a four piece skirt, and the only 'rule' was to try not to have the same fabric touching itself. It was then all zig-zaged down. She stopped wearing it when it developed too many 'pockets', so I got it and re-made it.

I also made the blouse by hand and the lace 8) , and they fit onto a doll I still have somewhere in the loft.

Margo, what a beautiful quilt and another beautiful angel! Humm. I wonder if I could get one of those done before # 16 arrives in September? Maybe I'll just stick with her Peter Rabbit theme. She already has a couple of Peter Rabbit quilts and how many of those does she need? I'll have to think about that after Hst's and SS's are mailed. ("She", is my fifth and youngest child, expecting her second baby.)

That is beautiful, Margo, but I have the feeling that any grandchildren of mine would really need a slightly crooked halo. It's those 25% genes the poor little ones are getting from me.

And back to the crazy patchwork: You could cut wing-shaped pieces of backing fabric and then follow Rosemary's suggestion.

Actually, you could make any kind of shape with crazy patchwork and then appliqué it to a background: Large stars or hearts, squirrel, flowers, suitable motives for Christmas, kokopelli and/or native Indian bear shape, .......... Another rpoject for after I have retired.
