    Quilt top mess

I was given a quilt top that has about 5 inch squares with four triangles in each square and put together to make an 82 x 76 top problem the person who put it together oft set the strips so there is no straight quilting line, like for stitching in the ditch ,the fabric is old scraps from 70's and 80's, good condition, but my question is should I stitch in the ditch and have non continuous lines or consider an all over stencil that does not accent the squares since it is oft alignment.

Hard to advise without seeing it, but it sounds like it would greatly benefit by having an all over design. Stitch in the ditch can be done by going around each square seperately, one at a time, being sure to keep the stitches IN the ditch.

Oh, thanks for posting a picture! What a wonderful scrapy quilt! Definitely an all over design!

I'd go for a simple all-over quilt design. It's a very cheerful, scrappy top and I would love to have and use it. I'm a great fan of what I call 'Happy Quilts'.

thank you Lorchen and dawn ,I was leaning toward an all over design but thought I would ask other quilters. I'm just getting back into quilting and was unsure of myself. so again thank you.

Maybe a FM flower design with flower heads of various sizes. Remember the ones you might have doodled in grade school? The quilt maker was a smart one as off seting the blocks, there wasn't challenges with matching seams and it makes the quilt more interesting. What a happy quilt!

If this is all cotton have you tried pressing it with pins, ruler & steam?
You might be able to get that all straightened out.

I was also thinking baptist fan when looking at the quilt. Probably because someone had recently asked about it. I don't think an overall meandering would look as nice. The BF would give it a little more of a controlled look.

Ckeck out Patsy Thompson's "Free Motion Quilting-Beginning Free Motion Quilting:Part 2". I think the loops and flowers design would be great--curves are always a good break from the straight lines of the piecing.
