    Baptist Fan

How do I mark my quilt top for this pattern? Do I need special tools? Is it done FM?

    Thanks in advance

Since you asked about FM, I assume you will be machine quilting on a domestic machine? I've done FM Baptist fans on a domestic machine by marking the quilt top before I pin baste the sandwich using a stencil and washable markers, then free motion quilt it with a darning foot. I like to have my feed dogs disengaged for FM quilting.

Stencils are available from The Stencil Company, but they call it Bishop's Fan http://quiltingstencils.com/search.aspx?find=fan
Others are available from J D Stencils http://www.jdstencils.com/stencil_we...1-2010_014.htm

You can watch this video from Off The Edge (a long arm template supply company) to figure out how to stitch in a continuous line. Of course, manipulating a quilt through a domestic machine will be different, but you can see the sequence here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD5QrFG1YiY

Baptist fan was is popular design by hand quilters because the arcs can be easily "eye-balled" and quilted with no marking by keeping the lines of stitching approximately a needle's length apart.

Is this a quilt pattern or just a quilting pattern.

Baptist Fan is just a quilting motif. It's also know by lots of other names like Methodist Fan, or Bishop's Fan!

I sometimes glance at a title or a word and read it wrong. I thought it said Baptist Fun, and thought, "The Baptists are having fun? I want to have fun, too!" So, I clicked on it. LOL!! (Just a little insight to the real me. Definitely blond!)
