    batiks with pieced shirts?

I am making a baby quilt out of my deceased fathers shirts for a great nephew named after my father. It is mostly small plaids checks and stripes. Would it look weird to use a batik for one of the borders? Or should I stick to solids?

I think the only way that you will know if it looks okay is to put it up on a design wall or just on a piece of flannel on a wall. You can then 'audition' various fabrics to see if they work for you or not. This is a wonderful idea for the new baby! Please post a picture of it when you are done.

I agree with Mema! Audition some fabrics. What a precious heirloom this will be for that baby!

        Thanks for your comments,
I did audition the batik and decided against it. I found a sweet blue fabric with soft white stars on it that looks more like a baby quilt
Quilting is new to me so my quilt is very simple. I remember seeing my father in the shirts so it brings back memories as I work on it. My sister also made a quilt for my mother using some of the same fabric. (They were married 50 years).

I will post it for you to see.

My sisters quilt is under her name. Karen Pelletier. (SUGARMUFFIN57) it is the second quilt in the row. Hers is much nicer than mine, but I plan to catch up with her someday! Why did I wait so long to start learning?!!

I love this website so much!

cpblay, I love the idea of using your dad's shirts, and I'm sure your quilt will be just as wonderful as Karen's!

Here is the link to Karen's profile:

          And the quilt she made:

Who says that you can't mix it? It's all a question of personal choice. If you like how it looks, then go for it! Unusual combinations often add a little spice to a quilt and make it stand out.

Please, share a picture when you have finished the quilt.
