I always run out of thread when I machine QUILT !

I have only machine QUILTED a few small projects but I always run out of thread.

HOW MUCH THREAD SHOULD I BUY FOR A 120 X 120 QUEEN SIZE QUILT WITH MODERATELY DENSE QUILTING?

    ALL THE SAME COLOR

All over quilting on a domestic machine.

Plan to buy BOTTOM LINE for he bobbin.

I just want a good ball park amount so maybe I will not run out in the future. ( I will probably buy extra) I have no idea on where to start. I just do not want to run out this time.

Superior Threads has a reference chart for that. I used that to figure how much thread for my last big quilt. It recommended 3 spools of my choice of thread. I used part of one!!

So I guess moderate - light - dense... it is all relative.

At least that is a good starting point and .... I'd rather be safe! I'm too far away from quilt shops and do a lot of shopping online.

I have the latest copy of The Quilt Life and Alex and Ricky talk about that very subject...all about threads. The answer is for a queen size it will take 600-1,600 yards and for a king it will take 700-2,000 yards...all depending on how dense the quilting. I find I always am afraid of running out and buy too much. I'll bet your quilt will be a beauty.

Buy a cone of thread. Economical in the long run and you will never run out of thread, quilting or piecing. I bought a thread stand and have it sitting behind my machine...... Wouldn't have it any other way!

I would also buy a cone of thread, Anna! Use the thread stand, because the cones are manufactured so that the thread feeds off the top of the cone like it does on long-arm machines.

I once quilted a simple 2 inch crosshatch over the entire surface of a 80"x 90" quilt. I just made it with inches left on a 500 yard spool. I used the same thread front and back.
This is my point of reference based on my personal experience. I now always buy more.
