Several months ago I found the Sahron Schamber basting method.
I have not used this method for a large quilt but love it for lap size and smaller. You can find her method on lline at http://www.sharonschambernetwork.com...our-Quilt.aspx

I Quilt on my machine. I use my invention PINMOORS to baste. I can take them out while I quilt the in the ditch seams first. Then as I quilt each other part I remove the pinmoors and I can easily see where I need to go next!! I have never used basting sprays.
http://WWW.Pinmoor.COM I am really spreading the word because I hate to use safety pins.

I did end up ordering Pinmoor and am anxious to use them. There is something up with my computer...quite a few times I cannot get a video to play, not just that one. Sometimes it's fine. I wanted to see Bob the Thread Guy's video about tension, but no soap! :x

Sounds like everyone has their own effective ways. I machine quilt on my Berninas (either my upgraded 200E using my stitch regulator or my 1230, for which I have a walking foot), and I pin baste to start, follow that with machine basting for larger quilts. Then I quilt from the center more or less by quarters (start at the center and complete a quarter, then back to the center for another quarter) up to the borders. then I quilt the borders.
I used to try to quilt from side to side, but I usually got into some bumpy bunchy problems that way.

I received my Pinmoor's. Smaller than they looked on the internet and I am happy about that. I was afraid of them being too big. They are perfect! I got pretty bright red ones. Wonder what color will be the most popular?
TQS should think about adding Pinmoor's to a taping of the show in their treasure chest segment. Something new and different that is quilt related.

Oh, Margo you should keep a few. I really want them for the pins I use to hold down the binding while I am sewing it on. I have an idea I want to try on the long arm as well. I have ruined shirts by getting them snagged on the pins that are holding the backing fabric onto the fabric leaders, towards the end of the quilt.

I too am a spray baste fan (all sizes of quilt), but I will pin or tack around the outside edge of a large quilt to stop it peeling back with all the handling.
I machine quilt on a domestic machine (Bernina 630, love it!), if I'm quilting continuous rows (like on a long arm) I will start at the edge of the middle row, and then work out towards the sides of the quilt. If I'm quilting motifs I'll start in the middle and work out towards the edges. I always do the borders last, sometimes after I've bound the quilt, though this does give you less to hold onto. I can't remember now why I did this the first time, but I must have had a good reason
