Need advice
I have been quilting since Sept. 2021. I made about 20 quilts so far. I wonder if anyone would like to look at my pics and give advice. I currently tape the backing to the floor and use basting spray but still end up with "wowies" on the back. Is there a better way? Everything I have learned so far has been from youTube videos as I don't know anyone who quilts. I love quilting and want to learn as much as possible. I haven't read all the posts as I just joined today. If I can be directed to anything it would be greatly appreciated. I attached a few quilt pictures.
Thanks in advance for any responses even if just to say hi!Tags: None

need or want to know about quilting. I looked at your quilts photos. Your piecing looks very good. I don't see the quilting so I am
guessing you are just stitching in the ditch. I would start by going to the Categories section on the left column on the main page and click on Quilting.
A bunch of shows will show up. You could start with Quilting Master Class show 2806; maybe Quilting Techniques Show 2511 and Grid Quilting show 2603. If I were you I would go to the Series Section also on the left column down near the bottom and click
on each series to see the shows for that year. Maybe make a list of the ones that sound interesting with the number of the
show and then let the fun begin. Just start binge watching! You mentioned that you spray basting. Do you spray baste the back
and then lay the batting down, smooth it out, then spray baste the batting and smooth top on that? Are you trying to do free
motion quilting or just quilting lines with the machine? Maybe a picture of a back that has the problem would make it easier
for people to help you out. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Quilting. It is so much fun. HelenWHelenW

My name is Jane. I don't know why it doesn't show up nor does my avatar pic of me. Another thing that is confusing me.
Yes, I spray baste the back, smooth out the batting then spray the batting, smooth and then the top. I saw someone do it that way and it works better than when I tried the quilting safety pins. Also, I have limited space which is why I use the dining room floor.
Yes, I quilt the seams in the ditch right now. I bought some templates to start free motion but I need LOTS of practice and the quilts I have made have all been given away and I didn't want to give away messy quilts, that would make me crazy.
I don't have pictures of the backs but a piece of the backing gets out of place and I end up with a piece folded over like a tuck or dart inside out. No one has complained except me.
I truly appreciate your suggestions and will get to watching more today.
Also, to be quite honest, heavy quilting, to me, makes the quilt look and feel stiff and uninviting, I like soft and snuggly which, I'm sure would come in time but again, I am new to this. It's like wanting a nice soft dinner roll and getting unleavened day-old bread. Again MY opinion and it will possibly change over time as I am open-minded and willing to try.
Thank you SO much for your advice.

Jane, Do you edge stitch around the entire quilt after spray basting it? it show how I edge stitch to hold both the backing and batting in place so nothing can get tucked under and make pleats. Also
if you can set your machine up so there is a nice big space around you that really helps too. My machine is on a small portable
table, but I bought Costco tables so I can put one to the left and out in front to hold the weight of the quilt. Not having to fight
the quilt really helps. HelenW

Helen,
First, that is really pretty. I am guessing that is applique. I need to learn how to do that, too!!
My main slipping issues are with quilting, not the binding. I know some of my earlier quilts are a bit wavy at the binding but I am getting better at that and am no longer irritated to rip out and re-do because I prefer better results. I am thinking maybe using more spray.
I started using my Singer then, after Christmas, I started to use my quilting machine, a Brother PQ1500SL, it has a good size throat and I do slide another table up to my sewing table to handle the bulk. Maybe I just need more practice.
Thanks for your response!

Millie, If you are talking about the LIVE SHOWS like Alex Live just type The Quilt Show You Tube and it will be the first one once it starts. If you come to the website it usually runs a notice in the yellow banner at the top of the page, just click on it. And it will take you to it.Originally posted by MJS17603 View PostI am having a difficult time, finding the show while it is streaming. Is there a link on the TQS site?
