Thanks Mathew for posting this question, and all of you for the answers. I am a new quilter...just started in January after not sewing ANYTHING since 1979, and was just starting a pinwheel baby quilt. I used the advice (starching the fabric) I found here, and my pinwheels came out perfectly...so pleased! It works

Yeah, let's hear it for starch! The other thing is to have an accurate 1/4". If you have a machine with a 1/4 foot with the edge thingy on it (I like to call it my stabilizer) then that should help too. If you don't then use Margo's method for getting a perfect 1/4" in the classroom put some tape in place as a guide and away you go. You will be spinning pinwheels in no time. It also might be a good idea to do a few practices on large fabrics to begin with. Also, I think the best way to make the HSTs is to join two squares of fabric right sides together, draw a line down the centre and stitch a 1/4" on either side of that line and then cut the drawn line away. Post photos of your progress and if it's still not going well then somebody will be sure to be able to help if we can see what you have got. Good luck.

Jinny Beyers' book and DVD on hand-piecing has great information for accuracy and understanding matching seams and points. Even if you machine piece everything-------it is worth a look to see how she pins the pieces together. You can get patterns and information from her website and check her book out of the library. I like to cut precise so as not to waste my fabric stash. I am frugal because I have to travel many miles to a quilt fabric store. And, Like the Dear Janiacs say," finished is better than perfect."
