Hi everyone. My name is Wilma Cogliantry. My husband, Jim and I are professional longarm quilters. We own Christian Lane Quilters in Connecticut. I just noticed that my word, Fatback® is being used as a generic word for wide backing fabric. I want to explain what a FatBack!® is.
FatBacks!® are 3 1/4 yard cuts (117") of wide-width fabric for backing Queen-sized quilts. The extra 1/4 yard is free! That extra quarter yard allows longarm machine quilters to mount queen-sized quilts (usually around 90" wide by 108" long) properly on their longarm quilting machines.
I have a trademark on my word, FatBack!® For more information about us, please visit our website, http://www.christianlanequilters.com.
Many people sell wide backing fabric of all different qualities. Christian Lane Quilters is the ONLY place that has FatBacks!®
It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter

Welcome to the Forum, Wilma and thanks for the great explanation about your FatBacks!®. I'm relatively new to quilting so it was definitely an unknown term to me (not anymore!Originally posted by CLQuiltersHey Margo! I know you from MQResources! I've been a member of this site but I've never posted until today. It's good to see a familiar face!
). Hope you to see you on the Forum whenever you can.

Ah, but it sounds to me as if a Fatback is a precut of 3 1/4 yds of the extra wide fabric, a bit like a jelly roll is 2 1/2" wide by width of fabric. Where as other extra wide backing fabrics can be bought at any length.Originally posted by ritzyUnknown to me too--I always just called it wide backing fabric.

That's correct, Rosemary.
I don't want to promote our business on the site, but, as more explanation, I'll also say that in addition to our Queen-sized FatBacks®, which we sell over the internet and at quilt shows, we also sell the same wide fabric in half-yard units on our web-site. When our quilting customers come into our studios, or when they mail their tops to us, we sell the fabric in inches, just the size of the backing that their quilt tops need.
Here's the link to a 2007 article that Quilting Now Magazine did about us and our FatBackss!®! Enjoy!

And, If you really, really, want to know more about me (holy cow, I hope I'm not overstaying my welcome!) here's a 2009 article in Unlimited Possibilities Magazine about my further adventures................................
