you are right good machine makes all the process much fun.
i love mine machine but it is anoying the bug of the thread. i will find out how to solve it soon (i just hope we will not have too much snow soon that i will be stuck at home so i cant go to the bernina dealer)

i just spent the evening watching the first couple of intro podcasts as well as the podcast of the first bernina 830 seminary.
one thing they stressed was the importance of using that little net thingy for all "slinky" threads - as when the threads are too fine, there is not enough weight for the machine/sensors to recognize the thread being there and apparently giving false error messages! the net gives it a bit of a pull - so that the sensors are fine !!!

sounds pretty much as if this might be it...
apparently they suggest the net for the transparent poly threads as well as for all fine and slippery poly threads - i.e. everything that "unwinds" itself if you're not super-careful. (like most of the threads i use - bottom line / masterpiece / the rainbows / etc. etc.)

on another line - test-drove the new ford fiesta today (in the snow - was snowing quit hard - and felt very comfortable & in control) i think i just found my new car...

the net comes in the accessories package with your bernina 830 - if i remember correctly there are two a white one and a ?yellow one
havn't done anything with them except take them out of the plastic wrapper and put in the accessories box drawer...
will have to get it out and try it out - hopefully tonight - but won't be home before 9 pm so don't really think will get up to much sewing

i wish i had 830! i have B580 that is already a rols roys for me, there is no net with mine. but it is relatively easy to find one at the drug store by some products! i will go and search. have great day today!

Becky, a friend of mine buys a pack of garlic (the pack that has single garlics stacked one on top of the other in the net) and saves the net the garlic come in and then cuts the package up to make nets for her thread.

You can also use an old knee high stocking. Just cut a band out of it. Be careful when using any net: some materials can have sharp edges that the thread can catch on - which is why I prefer an old stocking, nice and soft. Also be aware that any net will increase tension on the thread, so you may have to play with your top tension to get a good stitch. It may need to be loosened a bit.

Thanks for the comment on nets and tension, Michelle, definitely worth remembering and so easy not to think about in the first place. I might have a knee-high stocking or two in a drawer... I'll definitely try it. Speaking of stockings, but a little off the subject... when I took a sashiko class with Cory Pepper this past fall, she cuts the band of cotton socks away from the foot part and wears the bands around her wrists--it raises the temperature of your hand and makes handstitching more comfortable.

he tried to change the sensor, didnt work.
it is very anoying, all the good advices you gave me didnt help.
so he will talk with bernina swiss (after the holidays) and he will update me soon.

I"ve been having lots of tensioning problems and I found out on my 830LE that becuase of the last software update, I needed to thread it slightly different than I was taught when I bought it 2 years ago. On the top of the machine there is that little metal flapper thingy... well I was taught 2 years ago, to put my thread toward the front of the machine in front of that metal flapper thingy. I"ve been having all sorts of problems with the sensor saying my thread was broken but it wasn't. I was told last week to put my thread behind that little metal flapper thingy or towards the back of the machine. And what do you know! I get that sensor error lots less often now. A thread net helps too. So now it happens lots less often.

I think that metal flapper thingy is the guide for the upper tension discs, maybe.

The metal "flapper thingy" is the tension disc. You can thread your machine either through the front or back of the tension disc. The reason there is a "front" and "back" to the tension disc is to thread a double needle. Then you would guide the thread from the rear spool pin into the rear of the tension disc and the center spool thread into the front of the tension disc. See page 19 of your manual. You'll notice that on page 18 regarding threading the upper thread, the manual does not specify which side of the tension disc to put your single thread. I went over this detail with my dealer when I first got my 830. She taught threading through the front of the tension disc too, but when I questioned it, she admitted you could go through the front or back. I think it was just easier for her to teach it one way with eight people in the class at the time.

Hi, I have been told my Bernina store in Australia that there will be an update for our 8 series that will fix this sensor problem. If the machine doesn't pick up the stitches right after two stitches properly with the bobbin thread the sensor is activated. The update will change the number of stitches to six before the sensor is activated. The problem will be eventually be fixed.
