Becky, I have not read all the threads here to see what others have suggested so I apologize if someone else has said this already. The sensors related to the bobbin area are particularly sensitive. While you are waiting to go see your Bernina dealer for help, clean your bobbin area well. Sometimes, when there is lint in the bobbin area, unfortunately the sensor will tell you your bobbin is empty. I would still take it to your dealer to ensure it is not some other problem or perhaps the sensors need to be adjusted. But, you might find relief from the darned sensor going off if your bobbin area is clean. I wish I had seen this posting yesterday, I would have asked my dealer if there has been a trend with this problem and what the cause generally is. Unfortunately, today is her day off and so I can't call her. I am very curious as to what is turning your sensor active when the bobbin is still half full!

Here the pictures of my thread setup...
When you go to your dealer make sure you bring a selection of your threads ( especially the ones you generally have problems with ), and the corresponding bobbins, so that they can check your setup as well.
Good luck.Lotti, Kuessnacht - Switzerland

Lotti I really like your thread delivery set up! I have avoided multiple spool additions in the past (mainly due to cost) however, I see definite possibilities!! There have been a lot of great ideas in regards to the sensors posted here. I have a feeling mine will just be a matter of "adjusting" mine. But for now, turning off the top thread sensor as well as the bottom one have completely solved my problem. I did have one issue where the thread really did break, but I was able to catch it and with the magic of the machine I could back up my position to cover where the thread really did break.
I burned up ALL my time off and then some this year by travelling back and forth taking care of my dad until he passed away, but I look forward to a fresh start in January when once again I will have some vacation time from work. I am going to invest at least 3-4 days of that time off by trying to take a class or two at my dealer. I am 100% self taught in the use of my machine as well as quilting and embroidery. Haven't done bad for myself, but oh my.....what I could learn!!!! So excited for that.Lotti, Kuessnacht - Switzerland

Becky...everything that's been mentioned could be causing the problem...but let me tell you what I just found out....
Big Bernie just made a trip to the repairman. (I was cussin' about it all on another thread a few days back !) The major
issue was just what you explained as well as some others. Come to find out there is a "check spring" in the upper threading
area that can get out of place and cause this( and a host of other) problems ! If this is the case, it is an easy fix...ultimately
one you can do yourself once shown how. My face was red ops: as the major cause ...supposedly.. is pulling the thread backwards
thru the machine! A NO-NO for sure...that I try not to do...tho many years of bad habit's hard to eliminate  ....Mind you..there
is a big sticky note on my Bernie :!: ! So, just anther bit of wisdom for us 8 series owners.
I'm still keeping my records and Renata's helps, and everyone's thoughts and encouragements on file as I'm not that sure
she's out of the woods. Will reserve letter-writing for now...and see how it goes. Tech was very helpful and didn't over do it.
Thanks all of you !!

I had the great privilege of taking my introductory classes on my 830LE directly with Renata . She warned us all about pulling the thread along with lots of other hints. I think that's why my Gibbs has stayed in such good running so far. Thanks to Renata and Mei Ling (my wonderful Bernina dealer).

Another bit of wisdom...be very sure you have a dealer who knows the machines...I did not and missed out
on those valuable lessons as she didn't and/or wasn't able to offer them. I could drive and pay a rather large fee  to
take a series of classes now....if they have"room" ...well...can't see my way clear to drive 4 hrs for a 2 hr class x6 !
I really wish that Bernina offered something on-line like that...their other videos are so good !

Marilyn, go to http://www.exnovodesign.com and look under the 830 section. The guide class video series is there and it is outstanding!!! Although on this website, Amanda Whitlatch has put it under the 830 embroidery section, this video covers both the 820 and the 830. Many of the features of these two machines are identical and the Bernina educator, Susan Fears, who put this series together will show both 820 and 830 screens to help you. The main differences between the two machines are that, one, obviously, you don't have the embroidery module (so you will skip the last three videos of the series) and the fact that the 830 allows you to do directional stitching with your decorative stitches, meaning that you can do decorative stitches beyond the 9 mm size of your throat plate because the fabric shifts when you go beyond 9 mms--the 820 cannot do that (so most, if not all of video number 5 would not be of interest to you. In summary, you should watch videos 1-4, you will get more than what most guide classes offer and you will be surprised at how much more efficient and happy you will be with your 820. If I ever make it out to Idaho to learn to quilt from you, I will definitely offer you a one-on-one super-duper guide class! But PLEASE go through this video series NOW, you will not regret it and let me know if I can help you in any way. There are also a series of exercises that reinforce what is taught in the video series and it is worth trying every single one of them.

know how they go...I bookmarked your mention of this site the other day but had not looked at it yet. In all
my looking I'd missed her site ... Of course ! I' d love to have personal lessons from you...hope you can
make Idaho one day !

hello becky
there is a link for bernina 5 & 7 series machines - didn't download them so i don't know exactly what's on there - but if it's not what you need - maybe you can send amanda a message via her website.
my blue quilt: on my birthday (was nov. 28) i found out that my older brother had a bad accident this summer (why would anyone tell me... as i chose to live in switzerland obviously i'm not interested... actually my mom defended her not telling me that it all went so quick - and they fairly quickly found out that everything was ok - so why make a fuss - that's my family - he only had his face chopped up a bit by a propeller while working on a motor - but the eyes were safe and the nose could be taped up - so... ) apparently he was back at work just a few days later - that's my brother! anyhow - he's going to be 50 on december 12th - and with all my other projects, i always though his quilt can wait a bit - but after hearing about the accident i got out all my blue batiks and got cutting & sewing... don't think i'll have it ready for mailing on his birthday - but hope to finish it next weekend!
will post pictures when it's all done - but i can tell you - my Bernie is making this project so much more fun and much quicker than i ever would have considered possible!

Hi, Becky!
Unfortunately, the only comprehensive video mastery guide class available is for the 8 series machines (820, 830, 830LE), as far as I'm aware. There is not one for the B580. There is a brief tutorial series for your machine, however, on the Bernina website which you can find at http://www.bernina.com/en-US/Product...us/BERNINA-580 and it is a video series. This URL will take you to the B580 website, then towards the top of the screen under the photo of the B580 you will see a banner with different options. Click on Tutorials and it will take you to the video clips.
Once you get comfortable with the tutorials on the Bernina website I gave you for the B580 and are pretty comfortable with your machine, there is no reason why you could not watch the 8 series video mastery class because while the 830 has more capability, some of the functions are the same as your machine (just with a different touch screen).

Lotti, I am so sorry that you found out about your brother's accident in such a casual way so many months after it happened. Unfortunately, it is what it is--we have no control over other people's actions, just our own so I am so glad that you have chosen to take this opportunity to make a great quilt for your brother's birthday, just slightly belated as it may be. I can't imagine him not being thrilled when he opens the box! I look forward to seeing your quilt and isn't Bernie a joy?
