Quilt Shops in California
Hello Everyone,
Claire would like your help finding quilt shops for an upcoming trip to California:
I am a British quilter and travelling to California for a three week trip with my husband at the end of April. We are hiring a car and touring around starting in Los Angeles, travelling by the coast to Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Jose and San Francisco, then into the Sonoma Valley and back inland to Yosemite and Death Valley.
Although we will mainly be doing the touristy things(husband's patience is limited), I wonder if anyone can advise me on any quilt shops, or museums and galleries displaying quilts? We are planning to go to the textile museum in San Jose. I am interested in shops which sells home dyed fabric or has a large selection of rulers, book etc.
Thanks for helping her.

There is a nice little shop in Morro Bay called The Cotton Ball and another one in the next little town of Cayugas but don't know the name of it but the people in Morro Bay will know. The latter one has lots and lots of batiks and seashore fabric.
Judy in AZ who will be visiting there in Oct.

Northern California is brimming over with Quilt Stores. Here are just a few that I know of.
1. Laurel Leaf in San Carlos (South of San Francisco)
2. Always Quilting in San Mateo
3. Black Cat Quilts in San Francisco
4. Quilted Angel - Petaluma
5. Quiltmaker - downtown Napa
6. Cloth Carousel - Winters
7. Quilted Heart - Vacaville
8. Cornerstone Quilt Shoppe - Fairfield
Depending on the route you take to Yosemite:
9. Quilter's Corner - Stockton
10. Thimblecreek - Concord
11. Main Stree Quilts - Martinez
12.Quilter's Cabin - Oakdale
13. In Between Stitches - Livermore (Alex's city)
14. The Cotton Patch - Lafayette
15. Sew Country - Sonora
16. Bunny rose - Groveland
I hope you enjoy our beautiful state.

Claire, you will find a dozen shops listed on this site:
http://www.centralcoastquiltshops.com
These shops are all between Santa Barbara and Monterey. It's really fun to see how different each shop is. This site has links to several of the shops' sites so you can learn information about those shops.
I hope you enjoy our state, it's quite wonderful! You have chosen a very nice time of year for your visit.
Eleanor Burns' Quilt in a Day is quite a long way south of Los Angeles but it is a great shop!
If you were coming south to Orange County or inland Los Angeles County I could direct you to several other terrific shops.
Have fun!

The Cotton Ball is where I bought my first piece of fabric. It is a fabulous shop. I love to go there when ever I am in that area. I live in between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, not quilt shops in my town. I hope you have a great trip. My father lives in Cayucos and his wife loves the shop there too.Originally posted by jbtaz36There is a nice little shop in Morro Bay called The Cotton Ball and another one in the next little town of Cayugas but don't know the name of it but the people in Morro Bay will know. FFF, there are at least six quilt shops within about 20 minutes of Anaheim, one of them in Anaheim. Take a look at this map, click on the stars for information about each shop. I shop regularly at three of them, in Placentia and Brea. I plan on visiting the other three in about two weeks. There's info about their location, days and hours. This is a great site. http://www.quiltersrun.com/qr//map.htmlOriginally posted by fabricFabricFABRICI'll be in Anaheim for 5 days next month, and then in Joshua Tree for 2 days. Can you tell me of any "must see" quilt shops that I will be near?
I hope you enjoy your visit to southern California and that we have nice weather for you when you are here!

One of my favorite quilt shops, bar none, is Material Possessions in Lake Forest. They are tucked in a sort of light industrial area (very safe, just off the beaten path). Be sure to print directions but just a mile or two from the 405/5 freeway interchange. Lots of everything and she works hard to turn her inventory. Very bright & open. I stop in there with every trip that I can. :-)

A friend of mine was at Material Possessions on Wednesday, last week. Their shelves were rather bare and my friend was very disappointed after having made the trip. They ended up going even further, to Rosies in San Diego, a most incredible place!Originally posted by dianauppOne of my favorite quilt shops, bar none, is Material Possessions in Lake Forest. Joanne in California,
I am so sorry to hear about them. I guess we should all be calling ahead to stores on our travels in these tough $$ times. I know that more than one of the shop in our Michigan area is having a tough time filling classes.
I am heading to the San Luis Obispo area next week and will call ahead to confirm.

Diana, we are hoping that the Material Possessions store is just temporarily light on inventory. I've never been there but I've ordered from them a few times. Their newsletter says they have made the place smaller and closed the downstairs classroom. I just read part of it.
I hope you enjoy your visit to San Luis Obispo!

I was in CA last Oct. and went to 3 quilt shops. Google the Central California Quilt shops site , scroll up to find it in one of Rorimer's messages. They were in Paso Robles and Atascadero. If you are heading over to Morro Bay, there is the Cotton Ball. Have fun and take lots of money. Judy in AZ
