Nooooo, I'm not at all excited. Why should I? He is just a quilter who also makes heavenly music and wears a funny hat.

Wearing 'funny hats' is not an exclusively male preserve you know

By the way have you got one yet for the wedding?

Rosemary, I do not have a hat for my son's wedding yet. I am really agonizing over 'should I or shouldn't I'??

What about the rest of the outfit? personally I like hats as a way of finishing off special occasion outfits, however the fascinators are a nice alternative, although, for you, you would really need to work out the scale and style that would work for you. I would love to come & help you but am uncertain if we could manage to co-ordinate ourselves sufficently. I would suggest you nip down to the JLP in Nottingham and have a good 'play' in their hat dept, to see if any particular style feels good on.

You are so right, Rosemary - as always! I'm going for trousers and top in navy, with a rather colourful unstructured, longline jacket in a rather scrumptious Italian silk. The bride loves the silk. So, I think I'm going to go into Nottingham the week after Easter and have a look around. It always surprises me how little I manage to do during school holidays. A list of important 'stuff' accumulates during term-time, and then the holiday is gone before I have even managed half of what I had planned. Ah well, we'll see.....

I must admit I would prefer a hat to a fascinator. A hat is a little more substantial, and I can't really see myself with something frivolously frilly and feathery stuck on top of my short grey hair. But I keep an open mind and will try anything. If all fails I'll go 'hatless' or I'll borrow your rabbit hat for the occation.

Looking forward to see what you decide on, lorchen.
in the meantime: enjoy your excursion to see our favorite living, breathing, sewing and singing 'hatstand'. (and this description is meant in the nicest possible way!)

Well, Lotti, I'm always tempted to start humming the theme tune from "Raw Hide" when I see a picture of our quilting cowboy.

As to whether you should wear a hat or not to the wedding Lorchen, my mother told me that the way it used to be was that the mother of the bride decided whether hats would be worn by the women at a wedding or not. She was rather put out that I did not insist on this for my wedding and my MIL wore a hat (because she always did!). Perhaps that was the way back in the 1940s/50s but not when I got married. I am so glad that these ridiculous protocols have gone.

As for the GRAND VISITATION you girls are just going to have to calm down otherwise you will make yourselves sick with anticipation.

Rita, I am the mother of the groom, and there is the wonderful father of the bride, and that's it. My ex-dh plays no part in the life of his sons (his choice about 20+ years ago), and Kerri's lovely mum died very suddenly and tragically of a brain tumor about three years ago. So, Kerri's dad and I will be 'paired up' for everything on the wedding day, and we both feel comfortable with that. We find it very easy to come together as one family, but we will all miss Christine on the kids' wedding day.

So, back to the old hat: It's totally up to me. I'm not going to stress. I'm going to spend a few days shopping. If I find a hat that I like and that doesn't look silly, I'll wear one. If not, I'll go without.

And to get back to "The Event of the Year": It's a shame we can't adjust the topic title because it should now read: "Just 2.5 more days!"

Lorchen, how about a cowboy hat? My sister-in-law wanted to wear a white lace cowboy hat for her wedding in 1988. Of course, she said it only to irritate her mother. But, you could wear the cowboy hat and hum "Rawhide"?

whatever you do, please let us see a pic of you on the big day with Ricky and also on the big day of your son's wedding!

Oh dear! I just heard on the radio this morning they are calling for sleet tomorrow! I hope that doesn't prevent me from getting to The Event in Oldham.

Lorchen, have fun finding just the right outfit for the wedding. I got to do that twice last year as both daughters were married in the same year. I didn't even think to wear a hat.

And my DH said they were threatening snow on the hills on Tuesday  I hope they don't mean the Pennines - a ridge of hills that runs down the 'spine' of England and just happens to be between me and Oldham, and to think that we had 'summer' last week as well. I hope it is not all downhill from here on the nice weather front!
