WOW, Kathy! I'm impressed with how you decided on a plan to free-motion quilt the names of all your HSTs!!! So glad all of the excess dye issues on your quilt are over for you too. And, now in addition to checking out several other LAQ machines, the HandiQuilter has been added to my list as well. Thanx for sharing.
Cheers,
Shirley

Louise how pretty! I've been bragging on these quilts to non quilty friends who wanted to see them. Will you be giving Carol the pictures for the CD? Or better, hoping the smilebox is open to everyone to see. Kathy, I'm pretty impressed how you figured out the placement of the names.

Judy, according to the Dharma trading website, Retayne is used on commercially dyed fabrics to keep the dye in the fabric when it is washed. Synthrapol is used for hand dyes or batiks with excess dye, it traps the dye in the wash water to keep it from depositing back on the fabric. I've got a BIG bottle of synthrapol but only a little one of Retayne, since I use batiks a lot and I dye fabric. That's what I'm going to do today, yippee!

I second Patti's comment, Louise. Your quilts have been so beautiful. It's good to think of these going to people who need some comfort, too.Originally posted by PattiSureLouise how pretty! I have the Excel list of names from Debbie. I played around in Excel to get the sorting order and info I wanted. If anyone is an Excel phobe, I can help you get the results you want (first name and last name only, location, character counts, sorting, whatever). Let me know. Since I work, it might take me a day or so to get back.

Easy way to remember the difference between Retayne and Synthrapol:
RETAYNE - It RETAINS the colors! Use this for prewashing store bought fabrics the first time, before they are cut and pieced into a quilt. This sets all colors so they won't bleed in the future. If you use retayne on a quilt that has bleeding, it will set and retain all the bleeding! Not good!!
SYNTHRAPOL - Pretend it's spelled SYN-TRAP-OL!! This TRAPS and lifts loose dye particles from fabrics, esp hand dyes and batiks. It can be used after fabric is cut and sewn into a quilt. It can be used to remove bleeding spots on quilts... you must use the hottest water you can, and it may take more than one washing. Try not to use the dryer until you know for sure the bleeding is out.
Shout or Woolite Color Catcher Sheets are great too and can be used with Synthrapol.

Louise, the quilts are beautiful.
Kathy and Michelle, thank you so much for summing up so well the difference between Retayne and Synthrapol. I have struggled with that for a long time. I have saved both of your texts into a word document for future referrence.

Hello everyone, I have enjoyed following this thread. Here is a partial layout of the blocks I have sewn so far. The idea was inspired by Edita's basket quilt in her book. I wanted to do a bowl of fruit block. When I visited my Italian grandmother when I was a child she would always serve a beautiful bowl of fresh whole fruits after the big hommade Saturday lunch.
I hope to get the top put together this week and I will post again. Ginochka
OOOPs, I meant to post this in what have you sewn so far, excuse my double post. G
