Thread Spool Storage when transitioning
I am one of the fortunate ones who spend 6 months in the north and the other 6 in sunny south FL. Moving my thread collection is always a challenge. With the price of thread quickly rising, I do not want to build a new stash. I have all sorts of thread in varying spool sizes. Does anyone have a good solution to packing these in a manner that I can easily find what I'm looking for.I have silk, cotton (various weights) and embroidery threads. ASny suggestions?

I think I would start with drawers. Depending on how much thread you have, each drawer could be labeled for one type of thread, or each drawer could be divided to hold several types. Maybe something like this would work? http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ndingMethod=rr
It would be lightweight to move and would keep everything together.

I don't move with my thread, but I'm getting a large collection. The drawers that Margo suggests are the ones that I use for my thread and it works well for me.
If you want to go more expensive, you could look at something like these thread satchels:

These might travel better because they latch, but you'd have to dink around with how best to store different sizes of spools.

This is what I use for smaller spools. It has a handle, and although the drawers don't lock, they do have magnets to keep them closed.

Or check out their new products that lock!: http://www.blockboxcompany.com/New_Boxes_1.htm

I use the clear plastic tubs with lids that you get when you order a takeaway. You can buy them in the supermarket here in packs of three or more. Because they are clear plastic you can see what is in them and they stack on top of each other too. I use them when I am travelling to and from Kerry.

You all just gave me an idea-my mother gave me a wooden sewing box on legs; the kind that has sections on the side that open like wings. I can put my thread in there; then I'd know where it all is.
It doesn't have a drawer like this one but it's close.

Yes but is it large enough for all your threads
Another good place to check out is the hardware storage drawers that are available for storing nuts & bolts & screws in, take a reel of thread (more if they are different shapes/sizes) with you and see which ones it fits - a bit like Cinderella's slipper!

I have the satchel boxes Nancy mentioned. They are great! The cone holders are purchased separately. The boxes are deep and hold a lot of thread. Since you have various size spools just buy the box. Cover spools with batting to hold in place while transporting.
Go here for lower pricing and a box that accommodates different sizes.
