    Ruler Quilting on Domestic Machine

I wanted to try ruler work on my domestic machine but didn't want to spend lots of $ on rulers if I didn't like or had a problem with it. So.....I tried to find something that would work for what I wanted to try. On a visit to Michael's, I found some things that I thought might work. I've attached a picture of what I found and I found they worked quite well. The letters are about 1/4" thick, some made of paper and other something else that appears to have a fabric covering. These don't seem to slip on the quilt. I found some wooden templates and put some silicone circles on the back to stop slippage. Then I found that the templates I have for a double wedding ring quilt work as will. These work well for what I do on my quilts and is something you might like to try before buying the rulers and finding you don't like to use this technique. It's amazing what you can find if you search around.

Great ideas. I took a Craftsy class on ruler use with domestic machine, but I am just using rulers I have (used some paper crafting rulers/templates, too).

I know of one longarmer who also uses foam core to make customer rulers for specific quilts.

Great ideas! I do have some curved acrylic templates from my Radiant Suns pattern that I could try. Did you buy the ruler foot for your sewing machine? I don't have one as yet, but did see where someone glued a small metal O ring, or washer, to her quilting foot to give it the hight it needs to press against the ruler. I may try that.

I did buy the Janome Convertible foot with the ruler toe attachment for my Elna...it works very well. I also like the idea of using foam core.... will give it a try for some different shapes.

When I wanted to jump into the domestic ruler pool, I didn't want to spend the big bucks at first. I called our local glass company and they cut templates for me out of acrylic at 1/4" thick and was MUCH cheaper. I had them cut a 3" x 12" and also an arc. I then went to Lowes and purchased drawer handles that my DH drilled in them and counter sunk the screws. I have since purchased other rules, but still use those because they work so well.

Also the glass company would score the acrylic if I wanted them to, but haven't had that done yet.

I purchased the Janome ruler foot and the Bernina #77 foot and now can use them on both my Janome Horizon and the Bernina 750. It works really well and because I am using the Janome FMQ foot with the ruler attachment the foot doesn't hop at all. Really pleased with how it works. It was Patsy Thompson's tutorial on Youtube which pointed me in the right direction. Don't have access to those rulers but I have found that with the Janome ruler on I can use my regular quilting rulers without any problems.

Wonderful ideas for specialized rulers. I borrowed my DIL's longarm rulers to try it out first. I now have a small collection of rulers. I particularly like Lisa Calle's rulers, and she just came out with a set of interestingly done circle rulers. I got the set and they are fabulous. I still need to do a lot of practice before I'm very good at this though. But I'm getting better. Thanks for suggestions for other ways to get rulers.
