The thimble lady
I am signed up to take her class in Houston. Has anyone taken her class or use her method? I'm a little nerveous that I won't get it :-( . I alson don't really have a stand up hoop. I just have the little pvc one that's about 11" square. Should I panic now or later? THe hoop and pen and paper are all the supplies that are listed. Help! Thanks,CharlotteTags: None

Ive done her class - way way back we had her do a workshop for our quilting group.
She is very very well organised and encourages you so much
She might have a hoop you can borrow - or even buy at the class.
Good luck with the class - its a great way to hand quilt. And once you get used to it I find it faster!

Charlotte,
How did your class go ? I have the DVD, but would much rather have a class. Let us know how you're doing, OK ?
For anyone else who has tried this type of hand quilting, how did you find it ? What are the needles or type of hoop you've found to work the best ?
I'm hoping to hear from those who have done it, before I invest in one of the thimbles. I have nerve damage down my arms and could never do the positions that "regular" hand quilting uses.
Looking forward to hearing from you !

I did a class with Luixin ( the thimble lady) many many years ago, she actually did a workshop for our quilt group. I started by using her first style of thimble. Then when she developed her cone thimble I bought one of those and have been using that ever since
Her method does take a little to get used to - for example you have the quilt sandwich really loose in the hoop.
But with this method I can ( and do ) quilt for very long periods without getting the sore wrist and hand that I used to do.
Luixin is a good teacher and she will go over things many times.
She does have a plastic cone thimble that is fairly cheap to buy so you can see if its going to suit before buying a silver one.
I used the first thimble I bought so much I wore a hole in it!
I think I am going to treat myself to a stainless steel one next
Good luck with your class I am sure you will enjoy it.

If you go to her webpage on the left hand side there is a button which will take you to a quilting demo video
As you see she is demonstrating without a hoop to make a clearer picture but when using a hoop the quilt would be as loose as if the hoop wasn't there ( does that make sense?) and you can clearly see her thimble and the fact that she uses quite a long needle.
Watch how she manipulates the fabric with her under hand. The needle never goes anywhere near any finger under the quilt.
I have to admit that even after years of trying my finger still gets too close to the needle!

Maureen, I saw the video clip. Her method looks good, but I think I would push the needle too far without a finger or something under the quilt to catch the needle. But, I won't knock it till I've tried it!!
It's been so long since I've quilted, I'll have to re-learn.
Take care, Sharon in TN (quiltnlady)
