    Setting TRiangles ?? What size???

Is there a formula or method of figuring out what size setting triangles you need when setting a block on point ?????

I have only one made one other on-point quilt and that quilt did not have sashed blocks. I just followed the instructions in the class / pattern and it came out fine.

This time I do not have a written pattern as it was a mystery class and we followed the instructions to make the block. I am suppose to go back for a one on one sessions with the instructor but I won't be able to this three Saturdays from now since I am out of town for the next two weekends. I really want the quilt done before then...

These blocks are sashed with 2-1/4 inch sashing I have PRE- sashed the block on the left side and the top of the block.

Block Size un-sashed is 7 inches ( finished.)

Blocks with sashing come to 9 -1/2 inches by measurement .... ( I have squared them up to the EXACT 9-1/2 inch size, )

Any help would be greatly appreciated for figuring out the side setting triangles. Basically I just want to know if there is a formula or technique for figuring this out in the future.

    Thank you,

    Anna

      Hi Anna --

McCalls has a formula for on-point settings that I keep in my favorties. Can never remember the formula! Here you go....

      Hope that helps.

Be sure you cut your triangles such that the NON-bias edge goes along the outside edge of the quilt.

If you starch your fabric heavily before cutting the triangles, your bias edges should hold steady 'til you can get them stitched down.

I always add a couple inches to the size of my setting triangles, then trim after I've sewed them in. This avoids the "uh-oh...I cut them too small" thing. You can cut a test triangle from newspaper, if you aren't confident you have the size correct, before you cut your fabric.
