How to hand applique on a large pieced quilt top

I usually machine applique on blocks to be pieced into a quilt. However, recently I made a very large quilt with lonestars and applique spaces between. The nature of the piecing and applique did not lend itself to doing the applique and then piecing into the quilt. I thought hand applique would be the easier route with so much fabric to manage. This would be a new challenge for me but there would certainly be a youtube tutorial with tips on how to manage machine or hand piecing on a large background or large pieced project. I have not been able to find anything. The quilt top measures about 80 x 80. Any resource help or tips from personal experience is greatly appreciated.

Chrystie, You could start by watching The Quilt Show 2 Masterclasses on Applique.
Becky Goldsmith show 611 is another good one. She also has a you tube channel with 41 hand applique videos.
