OMG, I'll take paper-piecing any day over trying to get strip sets to come out right. I thought I had my 1/4" nailed. One thread off. I've been saying a lot of bad words tonight, but finally got the first set to 8 1/2 inches. I'm not even attempting the other one until tomorrow.

Connie, I'm looking at your picture thinking I don't care if all the points don't match up perfectly, as long as the outside measurements are correct. We'll see. I take that part on tomorrow, or Saturday.

By the way, that seam destroyer takes chunks out of fabric if we're not careful.
For that 16 1/2 strip, like I mentionned in another subject (month 2 sashing I think), Try paper-piecing the strips on graph paper. The inch is then perfect all the time. One thing less to worry about!

Thanks Andree, I'm going to try to get that seam allowance right one more time,, and if not successful, I'll try your idea. Am I correct in thinking you did this for the final measurements, not the whole strip before cutting into sections? (does that make sense?)

Great idea about the graph paper Andree!

If anyone is still struggling with sewing an accurate 1/4" seam, you might want to check out my tutorial:

I have been paper piecing mine and leaving on the papers when I attach the triangle units to the centre strips. That way the 1/4" line is still there so I just sew on it.

Thanks Rita, that makes so much sense. So I take it you didn't follow the thousand pin routine?

Thanks Margo. I made just a tiny adjustment to my 1/4" tape guide and I think I'm good to go. I am going to check every two & four set as I make the big one.

I am an Accuquilt junky. There is no help, just keep the dies coming. Today on the Accuquilt site, there are limited time only multiple-cut circle dies. Is there any way to find out how big the finished size of all those tiny circles are in the border?

Susan, I will see what I can find out and will post any info here.

I sewed the strips (half of the WOF) directly onto the graph paper:

I did the same for the 16.5 inches. Then I cut the 3.5 inches for each sashing. an finaly remove the paper. The paper is heavier than vellum, so to remove it "easily" without pulling too much on the seam, I used a metal ruler against the seam:

                  Hope that helps!

Susan I did not go the 'route of a thousand pins'. This is fiddly enough with the paper piecing. Andrée that's a great tutorial.

I'm an accuquilt fan too - especially when there are so many of the same shape to cut!
Looking at the picture, those tiny circles looks smaller than the base of the small triangle in month 2 sashing, which measure 1 inch. My guess would be 1/2 an inch... not more. But I see also the centers of some flowers that look a little bigger. Maybe those 3/4 inch from accuquilt could fit?

Susan, at this point I do not have access to any instructions for later months so I can not tell you what the sizes of the circles are. I will try to find out where the original quilt is and see if someone can take a physical measurement for us.

Susan I would suggest that to be on the safe side you should probably buy those dies anyway.

I am quickly becoming an Accuquilt junky. I just checked the Rose of Sharon 1, it has a 1/2, 3/4, and 1 in circle included. This may cover what we need even though we would need to cut 4-5 at a time. Much faster than hand cutting. Carol

Andree, your paper piecing the strips on graph paper is brilliant! Rita, leaving the paper on the triangle strips also sounds very promising! Thanks for the suggestions!
