    November's Flying Geese Borders

Is everybody ready to make a flock of flying geese???

There are a LOT of different techniques for making flying geese units. Sue recommends paper foundations, and provides them in this month's directions.

I did use paper foundations, but I also used an "add-a-quarter" ruler during construction. I felt that was easier for me than holding the fabric up to the light to get it lined up. I've added a brief tutorial on my Webshots album if anyone is interested.

    http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/...75362358jtVQqV

If you have a favorite technique, let us know about it. Especially if you have some kind of a link that explains it!

    SEW LONG!

Margo, I've been making mine exactly as you did in your tutorial (thanks for posting that!). The first set of 6, I didn't cut off seam allowances and had some unfortunate mishaps. Some of them just involved taking out a seam, but I after I cut off my actual piece instead of just the seam allowance- twice- I switched over to cutting off the seam allowance before sewing on the next piece.

It's tedious but they are turning out beautifully. I'm working on strip #6 and #7 now- it's taking about 90 minutes to make two sets.

Before I print out the directions, are there any corrections? I assume everything is okay. I am waiting a day or two to print as everyone out there is way ahead of the game. I am still on February. Judy in AZ

I got started tonight after cutting all the pieces. I like doing the paper foundation and also use the add-a-quarter ruler. Yes it is a little tedious but I like to do things slowly to hopefully cut down on too many take outs, although I am quite proficient at taking out.

Help! I have printed the templates with scaling off, and the resulting templates are not coming out 1 1/2 by 3 inches. Are we sure that these templates were generated correctly?

              I think he did.

Yes he did, I was just going through some of the old shows, and he was explaining his technique in Episode 107.

Ricky's one seam flying geese result in a dimensional unit. That is not bad...just different. There are no seams along the 45 degree angles and there is added bulk.

I am going to use the No Math Flying Geese ruler. I have all my units cut out, and will take the "sky" units to work today to mark. Looking at Sue's "bikini" method, it looks to be pretty much the same!

Thanks Margo for the pictures! Coincidentally, I'm currently also doing Annie Smith's online class for he Quilter's Palette which has several pp blocks and she she uses the same method with the 1/4"ruler so I had automatically started using it with my "geese"!

As others have said, there are several ways to do these, and the pp way might seem a bit more time intensive, but they are coming out beautifully! (also when cutting the fabric beforehand, you don't have to be 100% accurate - which I love if in a hurry!) I find having all the fabric precut into piles goes fairly fast when doing the pp process. Tearing away the pepr can make a great in-front-of the-tv pastime also!
