    July 2009 instructions

There's an error on page 4 of the instructions for the setting of the last border star! The picture on page 1 and the setting pattern do not match! So which is correct?

Maggie in E. Central Illinois (I like the picture, as it is different from the rest of the stars!)

    #2
I made mine following the pattern then looked at the picture and found the error. I'm going with what is completed. No going back now! Marge ( I don't think it will be noticeable when the quilt is assembled. At least I hope not!)

I just found there is a second mistake. In block 3 the pinwheels are reversed from the layout to the photo. That one isn't major and I'm not doing it over. In block 4 the flying geese unit in the outer rows is different in the layout than in the photo. Is the photo the correct one?

Maggie, Quilting Grandma, and everyone else....

My apologies! Yes, the pattern and the pictures do not match. Ouch! You would think that after all of the double checking that I do, that I would have caught this! I am going to chalk it up to 1) carelessness on my part, and 2) a test to see if you all are really paying attention! Just kidding about #2... it's totally my fault. At least this is not an "Oh, CRAP!!!" mistake -- it's just a flip of the half-square triangles on both the reversed pinwheel on one blok, and the reversed "flying geese" or double-half-square triangles of the fourth star block. Darn it! I hate when that happens! Thanks for pointing it out -- maybe others will not worry, after reading this, when they "think" they've made a mistake. Nope - it was ME that made the mistake. Just goes to prove that we all do our share of that... and hopefully when we do, it doesn't make the world fall in on us!

Thanks for being so patient with me... and wow - you two are FAST with your sewing!

        Happy quilting -
        Sue Garman

I haven't sewn my July blocks together yet but do have everything cut. Which was "supposed" to be right - the instructions, or the pictures? I guess I'm going with the instructions since I based my cutting on the little piecing diagrams. Since I'm doing a scrappy look, I just figure out one block at a time.

I went with the instructions because the picture made a block that looked different from all the others so far. That was just my decision. In the end it probably doesn't matter all that much.

I just printed out the instructions tonight. I really like this month's stars so I think I'll duplicate the pictures. Not to worry, Sue. Your instructons have been great so far. Nice to know our icons are human. Gloria

I'm glad I read this before I finished block 2...I would have thoght I was doing something wrong. I usually check with the picture and the directions, but today I just went with the directions. Thanks for the heads up...I do enogh unsewing to get the perfection that I want so every bit of help along the way is greatly appreciated.

With a pattern this complex, a few minor errors in the instructions could easily be overlooked. Fortunately, they didn't cause me any problems.

Now that we've made so many stars and since I'm using flying geese wherever possible, I no longer even print out all of the instructions. I just print the first page with the photo of the four star blocks and analyze each star block to determine how many HSTs, flying geese, and 1" finished squares of each fabric are needed.

I've only used the paper piecing templates for the HSTs after I have used up all of the small scraps of the right fabrics. I'm using all of my fabric bits and pieces first to help ensure that I will have enough of each fabric to finish this quilt.

Although it's a little more work to make the flying geese, I prefer them over using two HSTs because fewer seams allow for more of the fabric prints to show, uses less fabric and creates less bulk.

I'm now looking forward to the August Stars.

Well, I looked at what I had cut and realized I only had to make a minor change in order to do the blocks like the pictures. I kind of like the fact that one of the blocks looks a bit different from the others we've done. So I will assemble mine to look like the pictures this time, I guess. I've got one done. The rest are waiting while I paint the guest bathroom...ughhhh.....NOT a fun job.

                        Hi all,
I'm a bit behind everyone else, and after seeing how nice block #3 looks, I'm thinking about making some of my other stars like that as well. Since this is a scrappy quilt, it should be ok, and it's more fun (and hopefully more interesting to see) different types of stars.
                        We'll see.

I'm rather behind in getting July's stars done, but noted with interest these posts about the small differences in diagram versus picture! I agree, that making this quilt YOUR own, is best and there is no RIGHT way! It in fact reminded me of something my grandmother told me a long time ago that "mistakes in antique quilts were made on purpose to demonstrate humility"! For more about his myth and many other "interesting quilting myths" go here for some fun facts: http://www.womenfolk.com/historyofquilts/myth8.htm

Guess I've therefore demonstrated LOADS of humility in my quilts over the years!

Enjoying the BOM 2009 process very much (and everything that Sue is teaching us!) and looking forward to August's stars!
