    2009 BOM 4-patch w corner-setting triangles

While the feathered star went together fairly easily for me, these darn 4-patches with the corner-setting triangles are giving me fits. Anyone else attempt these and come up with 29 inches for the two long ones?

My two long ones came out as 29-1/2 inches and 29-3/4 inches. They are both supposed to be 29. Plus, they aren't exactly straight, more like they are kinda wonky.

Sue's videos have been very insightful for me. I would have never gotten the placement of the little fabric pieces on the paper-piecing without her tips. I wish she would add another for this month on the 4-patches with emphasis on tips for the corner-setting triangles. Hint, hint

Bonnie, I don't know if it will help you but I've posted some photos and instructions in my Webshots tutorial.

And, for what it's worth, mine didn't come out to the right size, either! However, the beauty of Sue's directions, is that with the addition of floater strips we can make everything fit together!

You might try blocking the strips to the correct size with a gentle steam and pins.

I'm about halfway through my 4 patch sections. I've tried to work slowly and accurately and the individual four-patches turned out well. It took me a while to understand how to lay out the setting triangles and corner triangles but it finally "clicked." I'm in the process of sewing the parts together now, so I don't know what my finished strips will measure, but I'm glad we have the floater strips so that we can rescue ourselves if necessary. I haven't started the eight stars yet although I have the fabric cut. I'm deliberately trying not to rush through this! I know that my accuracy suffers when I get in a hurry or when I've stayed at it longer than I should. I'm taking frequent breaks and only doing a small amount each day.

I work on mine so far the measurements are ok on my 2 short sides, I'm working on the long ones now. I do the pin and peek method. If I'm not sure of the placement, pin then flip and peek to see if it looks correct. Having said that I still have done my share of reverse sewing.

I had trouble with the corner setting triangles too, and even watched the video but it stopped without addressing the four odd blocks. By using the photo of the quilt at the beginning of the February lesson I figured out that the upper left and lower right "end" four patches are the same, as are the upper right and lower left. The first two have the large triangle sewed to the two prints, with the smaller triangles sewed to the side opposite (two white squares) and on the right side (with the colored squares on the bottom)while the other two "end" patches have the larger triangle sewed to the bottom (with the colored squares on the left). The small triangles are sewed to the opposite and on the white squares. Does this make sense to anyone? Is it right?? It looks like the double white blocks go towards the outside in each corner anyway, and they get a small triangle sewed to them in each case. Hope this helps someone, or at least gets Sue's attention so she can clarify.

Because the different corners can be confusing, and everyone absorbs information differently, if you are having trouble getting these corners pieced correctly, you might want to check the photos that I have in my tutorial. If you can lay out your pieces to match the photos, especially #14, it will all go together!

            Hope that helps!

                  BonnieH,
my long borders ended up being over 30 inches! i am off on both the short and the long ones, but the proportion of error is the same, i.e. i think there is a 5 inch difference between sue's long and short and the same 5" difference between mine except they are longer......i think my floater has to be 2" wide!!! which is o.k. because then i can hand quilt a nice motif.

i found this section more difficult than last month's star and will finish it next weekend.
                  cheers

                      Hi Pat,
I steamed and pressed mine flat and that helped "straighten" them especially for sewing. I pinned almost every inch and it went together quite well. You'll note that my inner floater is wider than the rest posted in general, but I'll make use of the extra width to show off some hand quilting. Thank God for the floaters!!!
