Anyone making BOM '09 into a King?
Hi I just joined TQS today and love BOM '09. But I think if I'm going to put all that time into piecing I'd enjoy it on my bed!!!
So I'm looking for ideas as to where to make the increase. Any ideas?
TIA,
Anna~

Welcome, Anna! Sue's directions do not include other sizes, but you could probably just keep adding pieced borders until it gets as large as you want it! I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

I'd also like to do this king size. I have a lot of queen size quilts but have only made 1 king size recently. If I figured correctly the way it is now only the final pieced border would go down the sides of the bed. If you're good at math you could increase everything by about 15-20% rounding to the nearest even number or fraction (1/2", 1/4", etc.) and then the flying geese border would also go down the side. You would need to adjust the width of the borders between the pieced blocks to fit. Then maybe you could add one more plain border using either the print that's in the large setting triangles in the center section or the smaller print in the borders between the pieced blocks to get to the desired finished size. Hope this helps.

Hi all -
So how do you turn a quilt that is about 85 inches square into a different sized quilt? Here are several ways to thing about doing that...
-- If you want a smaller quilt, just stop adding -- or eliminate some -- borders.
-- If you want a quilt that is rectangular instead of square, think about taking the last border (the staggered stars) and instead of putting one on each side of the quilt, add two borders to the top and bottom of the quilt without adding a border to the sides of the quilt -- that would give you a quilt that is about 75 x 95 inches. Alternatively, for a perfectly sized queen size quilt, add 4 inches to both the left and right sides of the quilt -- you could do this easily by adding a strip of 3-inch wide flying geese to the left/right sides of the quilt, along with a final 1" outer border strip.
-- If you want to make the quilt king-sized, you have to decide what size that is -- it could be 100 x 100 or it could be 100 x 92 inches. Let's assume you want to make it 100 x 100 inches -- in that case, you will need to add about 8 inches to each side of the quilt. You can do this by adding an 8" wide strip of a pretty fabric (perhaps the same one you used to set the feathered star on point in the middle of the quilt) to each side of the quilt. Or you could add a 5" wide strip of fabric to each side of the quilt, followed by another border of 3" flying geese. Get the picture? If you want to make the quilt an un-square king sized quilt (100 x 92"), you can add the 8" strip to the sides and bottom of the quilt, leaving the top of the quilt just the pieced edge, as it would presumably be under the pillows.
Whatever you do... just remember that there is no wrong way to design your own quilt. The 2008 block of the month certainly showed that you all have a tremendous amount of creativity -- enough to inspire all of us over and over each month!
Happy new year to everyone --
Sue Garman
