Thank you Margo, I appreciate your answers. Wow, I did not realize that those baskets are only 6 x 6 when they are finished.....Ouch! I am not use to piecing things that small. I can hand applique anything small, but when it comes to machine piecing, it is a real challenge for me. :roll: I guess I really will have to do some serious practicing. Big Grin Thank you!!!!!!

Just finished the 3rd month's assignment...which was very labor intensive and informative. I decided to try Margo's piping within the swag unit. I also put piping around the middle medallian square. I've used piping next to my bindings before, but have never inserted it within the quilt. I have a tendency to pull slightly on the strip of fabric as I'm sewing it. First, of many lessons learned.... don't do that with piping, it puckers!! Gluing the piping to the middle of the swags then making just one stitching across to secure all layers was a great lesson. I'm falling in love with the glue stick...had never used it much before starting this project, now it sits next to my sewing machine.
I'm following Margo's instructions for machine applique which I did on the center square. However, for the roses on the swag boarder, I layered a thin piece of poly batting to the wrong side of the rose fabric, then placed the stablizer on top of the right side of the fabric with the rose pattern drawn on it. I then free motioned stitched around the pattern, cut the stablizer down the middle and turned the rose inside out. I used fusible webbing to secure the inside pedals and free motioned stitched around the edges of the pedals. I then used a blanket stitch to secure the rose to the swags and they looked like they were trupuntoed (is that a word?).
I'm sure having fun making this quilt and am learning several new tricks.

Diane, it looks wonderful! I know what you mean when you say it is very labor intensive. I have been working and working on mine and I still only have three sides of the swags and flowers finished. It will certainly take me until the end of the month to finish this portion of the quilt....I am very slow. :roll:

I know, however, I want to keep up with it for as long as I am able. When the nice weather comes to Minnesota, I know I will not want to be in the house sewing. I will want to be in my flower gardens. Our summers are so short here, that I try and spend every waking moment outside. I have giant gardens all over my yard, so they take up all of my time. By the end of the day, I am too tired to sew. Either that, or I fall asleep in the middle of a stitch! Grin

Janice, I know what you mean by trying to get as much done while the weather is nasty because as soon as summer gets here, I too try to spend as much time outside as possible. Montana's summer is like your's...about 3 months long. Flyfishing is my second hobby and I find it extremely difficult to work on a quilt while standing in the middle of a river. I don't know how I managed to do this to myself, but I'm working on two BOMs this year along with another project and teaching a few free motion classes throughout the next couple of months. I tackle the hardest one first, which happens to be the Ruffled Roses, then on to the other BOM. When I get that one finished, the 3rd project doesn't get much attention. I know when summer arrives, I'll fall way behind...but this is a learning experience and not a race. Have fun learning everything you can...

Diane, your quilt is awesome! Nicely done, and so quickly! I am impressed! I am still on month two, but am enjoying the lattice work! The glue stick was my friend for the first month. I used LOTS of it. Then I'll be using it again on month three. Already bought another giant stick!
