BOM 2027 - Flight of the Bumblebee

Will a list of DMC thread colors be provided for embroidery in each colorway since the threads are not part of the kit?

    #2
I think Alex mentioned in today's video that it was only 1 color: black embroidery thread.
I plan to "wing-it" for the bumblebees, probably test the stitches and colors out on a blank, before stitching on the quilt fabric.
The applique thread used was the 80 wt. pre-wound bobbin kit in the store here at TQS, colors in that were selected to match the applique pieces.

    Are you using the kit?
I just ordered the kit, not accustomed to committing to anything this far in advance. More comfortable with "winging-it" as the project progresses, but I am excited about using the exact colorway for the Ocean Waves. I might look into the pre-wound bobbin kits in the store.
I was wondering how many people will be using the kits.

The only embroidery thread Alex used is black for the path of the bumblebees. The machine appliqué used Quilters Select 80 wt prewound bobbins—used as the Top thread. There are so many colors it is easy to match any appliqué fabric.

Alex may have said just black for the path, but I think she's forgetting the yellow for the bee

I was having a terrible time trying to see various details on my computer monitor. I thought the bees were embroidered on but seeing all the info about just the path being embroidered, I'm now guessing that the bees are appliqued. Thank you, Barbara, for all the work you do getting us information.

Linda, the bees are embroidered--Alex did them by hand. She will teach that next year. In the Reveal show she said she would encourage people to practice on plain fabric before embroidering on the actual quilt. And you can do any kind of critters you want. I wouldn't be surprised to find there are "ready made" BEE appliques you can buy somewhere as a substitute.
Today I finished all the center wedges and have only the final outer border to complete--all the units are done. Then I simply wait for Alex to complete the applique sections so I can assemble the top.
THEN I can start to play with Ocean Waves for myself--mine will have very little applique--I have a vision...

Barbara, Does your vision include a pieced Mariner Compass??? HelenW

Barbara, On a lot of things we think alike. It is a perfect vision. My first vision is to combine
the Ocean type batik fabrics and structure of the layout and add the applique from P3 Designs

Octopus Garden instead of flower applique. But my mind often wanders around a lot before
I settle on something. And for Carole Berry, I would do it in wool if I could afford it, so I think
she should go for her idea of wool and linen. HelenW

Definitely thinking about wool and turned edge appliqué for much of this!

As someone who does a lot of embroidery, I would suggest checking out Wonderfil Speciality Threads Eleganza perle cotton threads. They have their own line of colors, both solid and variegated in #8 weight. Another option is Sue Spargo’s Eleganza thread made by Wonderfil for her. Also comes in solids and variegated in #8 weight as well as #5 and #3. With the Eleganza thread, you will not need to deal with separating threads as you do with DMC. Including a few critters using Eleganza threads.

Carole B. Your little embroidery critters are fabulous. I need a lot practice when it comes to the
bullion knots. Do you have any you tube channels or books for creative little insects etc. on how
to make them? I don't do social media so no facebook. Are you still using wool felt or regular
sue spargo type wool? Would love if you mentioned the sites you get your stuff from. I HelenW

I found it exceptionally helpful to use Batik/solid fabrics for all the paper piecing and backgrounds. I strongly recommend that. Prints can be used for the appliques if you like.
The Fabric Requirements list is generous, particularly for the largest pieces. Start with one of those color ways and begin to compile your palette with the colors/theme you like.

Both pre-order kits look amazing, but I'll need to use my own fabric choices too re high cost of postage to UK plus customs charges etc. I would order lots of lovely kits and other items direct from The Quilt Show website and other places in the US if not for the extra cost, you seem to have much more 'quilting related' choice than we do, especially here in Cornwall
