Loved doing this quilt. On the log cabin blocks I fussy-cut the center block and colored the figure, then hand embroidered the whimsical ladies.

Hello All-- As we have reached the end of the year I am happy to be able to report that I have finished my version of this year's bom. I learned a lot about color, prints, how to stich by hand, cutting with precision, modifying design and never giving up. This is my "wall hanging" version -- when I thought I was finished making all of the outer borders I found I needed to make four more! lol (thats the break at the top) -- which I am finally working on today. Happy Holidays to all -- happy quilting. Thank you Barbara and all who post.

I misread the instructions and ended up with a lot of outside blocks.

Machine pieced the entire quilt. All the curves went smoothly. Didn’t like Jen’s appliqué so I drew my own.

Linda, Love how you were able to give the pattern a more calming look. Love the quilting. How did you
make the flower heads? Love how all the techniques work together. HelenW

The flowers were made using doilies that my grandmother crocheted many years ago. Four of them were originally coasters for stemware, and 1 or 2 were small baskets that she made. I cut the handle off of one of them so I could flatten them. I soaked all of them in Retro Clean, and then stretched them out to dry so the design could be seen better. I didn't have enough of them to go around the quilt, so I machined embroidered parts of the hymn, "In The Garden," to fill in the gaps. The quilt is based around that hymn that mother loved, so I thought it would be nice to include the words. I have parts of hand-embroidered handkerchiefs included in there too. It honors both my grandmothers and my mother, who have all passed away.

I arranged the blocks differently to create a secondary pattern. My mom's favorite hymn was "In The Garden". The fussy cut fabrics are garden related, and include my grandma's hand-embroidered handkerchiefs and crocheted doilies. I machine embroidered "flowers" of the words of the hymn

My top is sewn together. There’s no embroidery or big stitching yet. I decided to simplify the border when I realized I needed quite a few more fan shapes. Actually I think I prefer the simple border.

My top is finished. I did a different border. I will be machine and hand quilting. I found a fabulous Tula Pink backing that will be perfect.
