I need some suggestions/ comments on what I am thinking of doing with the flower appliqué that is coming up on Month 5. I have designed flowers, leaves and critters from my NY garden where I had lived and gardened for 30 plus years. These will be placed on the white log cabin border. Do you think it will look in cohesive style-wise if I mix needle turn appliqué with raw edge appliqué? Some of the patterns that I have drawn do not lend themselves to needle turn appliqué. I am also thinking about doing some thread painting on some of these. does this sound like it will be too much variety in techniques ?

Yes, all your ideas will work together. This is a scrappy quilt and is full of techniques. I think this is one project where anything goes.

Paola, I think it will work fine. I am doing a similar idea with butterflies green vines and leaves and flowers. The butterflies
and greens are raw edge, and the flowers are turned edge then just stitched on by machine. I am liking the look. HelenW

Do you use a tear away stabilizer when using machine applique?

No, I found no need for any stablilizer on these small pieces.

Thank you! I didn't think it was necessary.

I was intrigued by your mention of Quilter's Select 80 weight thread for applique in this month's video. Is Quilter's Select 80 weight thread shiny or matt?

It is polyester so has some shine. But it’s so fine the hand stitches don’t show at all.

What are the numbers for on the designs for month 5. My mylar templates do not have any numbers and there seems to be multiples of the same one. Thank you for your help.

There doesn’t seem to be any reason for the numbers. And there are multiples of many of the templates as they are repeated in other borders.

I was wondering at what point does Jen want us to sew the blocks around the center square (medallion)? I notice that some have done this already and I am unable to find any instructions by Jen to do so. I do understand that the log cabin blocks are to be done in sections while we applique. Thanks!

The assembly instructions come in Month 12. It doesn’t hurt to add that first border of blocks now. Just keep the log cabin borders separate until all the appliqué and embroidery is done, as you mentioned.

My first border all sewn down using Barbara's machine method with 80 weight thread

How long will all this information be available online? I am way behind - we moved and I was late getting the templates.
