They look fine like they are. I'd say as long as you're consistent and all point the same way you're ok. But do what makes you happy with it.

I couldn't wait to complete my block so I made my own coneflowers and leaves before the pattern was released.

This is the Black-eyed-Susan I could see in my mind's eye when I first saw this quilt. All the other colors were chosen to go with this. For some reason my petals are really big and I have some overlap with both the hollyhocks and the leaves, but I like the organic effect. One down and 3 to go.

I didn't post my progress last month because I appliqued the leaves after finishing the cone flowers.
Now the middle section ist completed and I'm very pleased with the result.

First coneflower completed.... three more underway. Not particularly happy with the cone at the top and may need to address the placement/shape. Needleturn appliqué. My smartphone and I seem to be on different wavelengths this morning and I am unable to upload more than a section of the entire strip which includes the hollyhocks, hence this giant image of the coneflower!! Just using fabrics on hand, so there is a mix of different varieties - Liberty, batiks, Fairy Frost, etc. etc.

Gosh!! I just clicked on the picture of the coneflower and found that the entire strip, including hollyhocks, is displayed. Technology!!

My first coneflower done. I had to redo the cone because it didn't cover the stem. I ended up sewing the light petals down first and then the darker ones. So much overlapping, I wasn't sure what order to sew them.
I'm using 80 wt Quilters Select medium gray thread for all my applique.

Carol, your method (sewing the light petals down first) is brilliant! Wish I thought of that. They look great too! I spent a lot of time trying to make them butt against each other(silly me, haha) and they don’t look as good as yours. Wonderful job!

I have a lot of different varieties of coneflower in my gardens, so I tried to choose colors that I see in many of them. These colors look like my meadows coneflower.
