Hi, Is there a pattern for the dresden plate template somewhere? I'm not finding it. Thanks,
No, Irene did not provide a template for the Dresden plate, most likely because she said to use Paperpieces.com papers. It is the 1” 12 Petal Chrysanthemum. The Quilt Show shop has a package for sale which also includes the large Diamonds for appliquéing the Outer Borders—PLEASE NOTE: if you piece the Diamond Borders instead of appliqué you will not need the Diamond papers.

If you want to draw the Dresden Plate yourself, here are the measurements, NO seam allowance. I strongly recommend you draw a 3.75” circle to create the 12 petals and 1 circle:

Dresden petal: 1” long sides, 1/4” at the narrow center end, two diagonal lines are close to 5/8” each. Height from tip to bottom is 1.25”.
Center Circle: 1.25” across

You can always choose to put something different in the center of the pieced block— I did Double Hearts in 4 of the 6 pieced blocks in my sample quilt made last Summer.

Barbara,
Excuse me if someone has already asked this, but what size are the border diamonds? I am using many scraps for my quilt and would like to save enough of each to make at least one diamond. I am asking here because you mentioned the diamond papers.

Hi Barbara
can you tell me what size the applique block is when printed out. I know the block is 12 1/2 × 13 1/2 trimmed when finished but want to make sure the applique is the correct size.

The actual finished block size is 12” x 13”. The pattern should be that size H and W when printed.

Hi, I am reading the instructions for Month 3, Block 3 - 4 patch on point. Cutting instructions for the 4-square say "Light fabric: 16 @ 3-1/2" squares and Coloured fabrics: 16 different coloured fabrics at 2-1/4" squares." What size is correct, 3-1/2 or 2-1/4? Thanks in advance.

Both are correct. The 3.5” light squares are cut in half for the triangles. The 2.25” squares are the four patches.

Barbara,
This is a little confusing and I have figured it out but the pattern instructions say:
"Light fabric: 16 @ 3 ½" squares
Colored fabrics: 16 different colored fabrics @ 2 ¼" squares"
In your video you say we need 16 dark colored 2 1/4" squares and 16 light colored 2 1/4" squares for a total of 32.

I don’t usually give information so far in advance but yours is a good reason to know the Diamond size.

The Resource Guide lists all the Kit fabrics and Irene’s recommended supplies. As she hand appliquéd the diamonds to a long border fabric she used Paper Pieces 3” Diamond. The FINISHED SIZE of the Diamonds is 5.25” tip to tip, each of the four sides are 3” and the middle is 3” across. If English Paper Piecing with the cardboard templates, use a 3/8” seam allowance.

I machine pieced the borders, not paper pieced, and will provide detailed information on how to cut and sew the diamonds for that method when we get to Month 10. The diamonds are the same size, with a 1/4” seam allowance.

This should allow you to see how large a piece of fabric you will need for a Diamond.

Barbara, Thanks for the up front info. It will be nice to be able to work on it in advance if time permits.
When getting to the final months, I always start thinking of getting it quilted before the year is over
so I can be ready for the your next great BOM at the beginning of the new year. Having this information will help pulling scraps that
are big enough and getting a head start on that month. HelenW

Irene’s instructions say when the Dresden flower is complete, spray the front side with starch, press, ket it cool, then remove all the papers from the petals. Make the circle, remove the paper, add to the flower, then appliqué to the background. The blog posted February 27, explains this also.

I never cut away the background fabric from the appliqués, but some do. The papers could be removed from the back side then. Removing the background weakens the quilt so I don’t do that.

The Month 3 LIVE and Blog has additional helpful information for this month.

I don't know if this is too late to help anyone. It is August and I am just working on Month 3 (also 4, & 5 at the same time.) To loosen the papers, I slid a stiletto under the folded edges in the reverse order I glued them (counterclockwise) and then slid the stiletto under the paper from the center and "swept from side to side to loosen the glue there. After that, I used a good pair of serger tweezers to pull the paper and then finger pressed the seams back in clockwise as I did originally. After a bit, it went pretty fast, but I did comment I am glad I don't make whole quilts with EPP!

Hi Barbara, I have been out of state the past month so trying to catch up! However on month 2 the paper border I get putting 3 to 4 and so on but for the corner I can only match it on two ends. Not sure what is happening.

Use a very light touch with the glue. A little dab will do.
