Official--size of center after roads are added

For those who want to know: The Center of the quilt, including both Roads, should be 43.5" INCLUDING SEAM ALLOWANCES.

As long as yours is CLOSE, less than 1/4" off either too big or too small, you will be fine.

The quilt shrinks a lot after quilting--my center NOW, quilted and washed is about 40.25" sewn into the quilt.

NOTE: I have UPDATED THE BLOG with this information.

Mine is only 42" and I truly believe it will never be flat although my center medallion and road laid around here for weeks perfectly flat. I'm wearing it out taking it apart--have been at it all day. Disappointing, because it's SO beautiful. Fresh start tomorrow may change my attitude. No doubt I'm going to have to quilt the heck out of it but I tend to do that, anyway.

Me too..I measured and re-measured, I was so careful and I had to take out and re-do my roads 3 times.

Living in rural Maine, I figure any wonkiness in my roads will make them just like those I actually drive on, all potholes and bumps.

Linda, Take the time to check the seams looking for any side of a seam that is not 1/4 inch, any drifting off to one side at the end or beginning of a seam. If you road is separate from the house center, lay it on a big mat and check your 90 degree points on both the road and on the house section. One or both may not be in alignment to make 360 degrees. You need exactly 360 degrees if you want it to lay flat. Don't give up on it. There are always work arounds if one way doesn't work. HelenW

Thanks, Helen. I've done all that. Made some adjustments. It all looked good laid out on the floor. I'm wishing now that I had sewn the roads to the center prior to adding the upper road. That's not what the instructions say, but it might have been easier to make adjustments and then sew on the upper road.
