want it to look. lay the template on top of the fabric, in alignment with the clouds. Put a pin it and then you can cut them to go the way you want because you will ;have the correct orientation. I had to do that with a couple
pieces on my Afternoon Delight border, paper pieced flying geese. It worked. HelenW
I only cut one strip of the background fabric and 1 of the background template as a practice so I'm not far into construction. So I will be doing it my old fashioned way--very similar to your description.

Missouri Star has the Art History 101 fabric. It’s called Treasure Hunt so I’m not sure if it’s the same. Looks similar.

This is the panel, not the same fabric

This is a possibility for background. It is a close up photo - so the 'pattern' is smaller than it appears. What do you think?
I'd love to see it with one or two of your houses.

I’ll probably start construction tomorrow, but I also found an older fabric—Compass in Dove by Alison Glass. I think it was a 2019 sun print.

Love it! and your houses are great!! Looks best with a dark roof, don't you think? Well, the yellow roof looks good with the dark blue sky. Maybe you could cut 8 roof shapes and mix/match them with the different color roofs.

Picked up my background today, which is 100% linen by Birch Organics called hippo. Is a light purple shade.

I’m doing wool felt appliqué on what will be a whole cloth quilt—something I didn’t know existed 2 weeks ago. Love this knowledgeable, welcoming community! I’m learning so much!
These are a few of the houses I’ve worked on so far along with their neighbors. It’s been fun to customize some of the houses to family homes, past and present.

                        Onto more stitching. Best, Carole

Looks great! When piecing the sky you could pick the yellow pieces of background for the dark rooves and the blue pieces for the lighter rooves

Hi Beth, I chuckled when I saw this fabric as I have the purple and am thinking of using that for my mariner's compass. I purchased my fabric in Auckland New Zealand just last week. Small world.

If someone who, like me, chose a one direction print for a background, they may have found the fabric pattern going in the wrong direction. I owe a special Thank You to HelenW who reminded me how to solve the problem. I made cutting templates from a paper copy of the pattern of pieces "j" and "k" with a 1/2" border. I put a few notations on the pattern to approximate how I wanted the fabric pattern to run. I place them face up on the fabric. It actually saves me lots of wasted fabric when I trim. Again, Thank You Helen!
PS: Fabric cut face up for small house #1 and face down for small house #2
