Flying geese insturctions confusing.

I have tried to make the flying geese twice and both are wrong. I draw the X and cut the cross. Then sew on both side of the line and I don't get the flying geese. What am I doing wrong. Should I not sew the 1/4" on all lines? I would rather have seen Barbara make the flying geese so I would not be confused. I don't want to keep doing the wrong thing and run out of fabric later.
