2010 BOM king sized
Has anyone made the Stars BOM 2010 king sized? I have just made the quilt and then added 10 inches of the white on all side which makes the quilt 102 inches.
Not sure if I like it, the proportions seem off to me. Any suggestions, comments? I am having it quilted for my daughter. Thanks, JanetTags: None

Without seeing a photo, I would say that just a slab of white around all that piecing would look unfinished. Like you just added a slab of border to make it bigger.
Is there a lot of white in your piecing? If not, maybe it's the color that doesn't work.
Maybe you would like it better if you add a 6" or 8" solid border ( using a light value color from the quilt) then a 4" or 2" pieced border to frame it. Maybe just 2" pieced squares?
A pretty cable would look good in a 6 or 8" space so she would have her fancy quilting, but a really creative quilter could fill the entire 10" if that what you decide to use.

I think you are right, it looks like I just added a slab to make it bigger. It is the Star Crazy quilt and I completed just like the pattern, then added the 10 " of the white to the last small green border.
I do think your suggestion of using a light color instead of the white would look better than that white on white. It would look more finished. I was hoping not to have to deal with those long borders again, but guess I must since I am so unsure at this point. It has been too much of my time, and work to get it quilted before I am completely happy with the look!
Thanks Janet

Janet, I think the wide white border will be just fine if you add one more green border that is the same width as the one between the two white borders. Because your background is also white, I think it looks great!!
Because of all the detail in the center of the quilt, I think that the quilting in that wide border also needs a lot of detail. Maybe something like this??

No, JoJo, it's not mine...but one I saw on MQR: http://mqresource.com/forum/index.php?app=ccsOriginally posted by ladyquilterJanet, your quilt is beautiful. I agree with Margo's suggestion of adding the small border.
Margo, the quilting is to die for beautiful on your quilt. Wow...a show stopper!
It's amazing what a good longarmer can add to a plain piece of fabric!

I love all that quilting on the photo Margo posted! WOW That is what I want on my daughters quilt, but still not sure if I like it the way it is now.
I am sending a photo with fabric pinned to the quilt to show how it would look if I reversed the two white areas.
I think it looks better and it still remains 102". Comments please. Janet

That still leaves white along the outside edge. Personally, I like it the way you had it before, but would still add a narrow green (or other dark value) strip to frame the outside edge, but that's probably just me. I like strong boundries. If you have as much quilting put on it as the photo I added, it will take up some of the fabric and the dimensions will be somewhat reduced, depending on the density of the quilting.

I think both can be used but I would definitely finish it with green binding. Have you thought of quilting with a light green thread to give a little color in the white areas? Normally I'm not keen on that, but I think it would work here. And pay attention on what Margo says about the border shrinking when heavily quilted. I knew about it and despite of that I managed to quilt my BOM 2008 too much in those big borders. My center was completely flat before and it was not after. Blocking did help a little bit but not enough. You learn something every time you make a quilt. Mine hangs the perfect place but I hate the way it waves, so I think it will end up on my bed. But that's what your's are going to do

Norma, have you tried blocking your quilt to try to get it flatter?
