    Small Quilts Gang

Ok, I like to make little quilts (about 15 to 20 " square) to try new techniques and design-types and to fit on the wall in small places. I also like to make somewhat larger wall quilts (up to 60" wide), and even larger if my daughter-in-law will quilt it for me, but that's another thing. It might be neat to have a "Small Quilts" category on the Forum. A small quilt can be whatever you think it is. What do you all think? Cheers, Betty Jo :?:

Good idea, Betty Jo! I have done some small quilts for one of the purposes you mention - trying new techniques.

Related to small quilts, I have always been a bit confused on the correct (or required size) for a journal quilt (the typical size I use when trying a new technique).

Hmm, I think you can make your journal quilts any size that works for you--just like you can have a large coffee table book or a small pocket sized book. Though I may be wrong--any journal quilt folks out there who have an alternate opinion?

In the UK the standard size for Journal Quilts is 8 1/2" x 11 5/8", the size of a piece of A$ paper. If you are just making them for yourself though they can be whatever size suits you. The Contemporary Group of out national Guild is currently doing them at 6" x 12". Maggi

I love making small quilts to try new techniques and different design ideas. In fact I'm making one right now using the 7 minute circle that Alex demonstrated last fall.I also like them because I know I can finish them in a reasonable amount of time. Julie

I have seen some beautiful small quilts at my LQS and have been very tempted until I realized how tiny the pieces are. I am learning to deal with the small pieces from the BOM, so, I think I've just added another project to my 'to do' list. Having fun in FL Sandi

I have been to the Houston QUilt Festival a few times and have spent hours looking at the Journal Quilt displays. The journal quilts are about the size of a "letter size" piece of paper (vs legal size, or something else). For the Quilt Journal project, I believe that a quilter will make one quilt per month and then submit ~6 to the Quilt Journal display for Houston. A book was published a few years ago - Creative Quilting; The Journal Quilt Project by Karey Patterson Bresenhan, which showcases hundreds of journal quilts that have been a part of the Houston Festival over the years. Hope this helps with your question! MK

I went to Google for a little help and found this:
                        http://home.att.net/~kareyb/JQ2008/2...bAnncFinal.htm

That site mentions "Journal Quilt Project II: Elements—Earth, Water, Air, and Fire". I think I saw that exhibit at Road to California. Now, I have a clue!

                        Thanks, MK!

Unfortunately, 2008 was the last year for the Journal Quilt Project. The group that did it will be continuing online only.
