I think that Katzz can help you out with her coloring mat project. At least I think it was Katzz. Judy in AZ who is getting more forgetful than ever

Do you have a scanner? You could scan the pictures already colored by the grandkids into your computer or take digital photos of the pages with your camera and put them into the computer. Then print it out on fabric.

When I want to copy something from a coloring book I use freezer paper and trace the picture. (It's backward when I finish because I iron the pattern on the wrong side of the fabric that I'm going to use. I always save the original pattern that I trace because I cut up the copy into the pieces I want to applique. (I usually do needle turn, but if you iron the pattern to the right side of the pattern you can applique it, with the machine without turning under). Hope this helps you.

you can always use your preferred brand of fabric printer sheets and photocopy the colored drawings onto the sheets using your household color copier/printer.

there is a thread on using printer sheets and the various methods used to make sure that the color is not lost/faded with use.

I usually take a coloring page and add an embroidery stitch outline through my customizer 10000 but you are right this does take alot of time. It can take up to 20-30 minutes per photo,it depends on the patterns - it can take longer. I make some that take 3-4 hours by machine using a decorative stitch instead of using embroidery.

Another method you could use is 100% white cotton muslin fabric you trace your patterns onto the muslin with a fine tip permanent marking pen. After they are colored in with crayons you can iron set them so the colors don't wash out but over time being washed often they will fade eventually.

"Always" do a test example first.
