Yes you use a straight stitch with this foot, there isn't room for the needle to zig zag. It does an excellent job with the right cord (needs to be dense). Loose yarns for example, won't work well with this foot, as the needle doesn't actually couch over them, but sews down the middle.

I was watching a Bernina dealer demonstrating this foot. She was using a nylon cording often used for fishing nets, bags, macrame and handicrafts according to the wrapper.
The name of it is Hilos, La Espica Nylon No. 18. It comes in many colors and looks very nice.
For those of you near Danbury Connecticut, it's the Quilt Store in Danbury.

I bought the free motion couching foot at the Minnesota show and got to try it on a present for my daughter. It's MAGIC. The control you have over placement of the cord is amazing--I was able to attach the cord right on the very edge of the small piece I was making. I was using a semi-dense yarn and blendables. The thread doesn't show and the yarn is firmly attached. Haven't tried Razzle Dazzle- I suspect it works best with bobbin work. It does say that the foot works with cording up to 2mm. I will try to play with it some this weekend and see what else it can do. It is a very fun foot!Cindy Bell Neville

Hi, I have the free motion couching foot, cannot remember the no. but it is clear plastic, circular and quite large. I found it very good, BUT, one you sew in a certain direction, c(annot remember which one at moment, was a while ago when used it!) it didnt catch the couching thread. Of course, it could have been pilot error! but still, was a good foot and I would recommend it.

I like this foot as well and have tried it with different cordings and yarns. It is more difficult to use than the video implies and you will see that they "cut away" a lot on the video so they probably have the same problem of the thread not catching the cording on some of the turns. It is still a fun foot and I think as with anything the more you use it the better the results will be.
