    2013 Year of the Snake

Today is New Year's eve for those of us who celebrate the lunar calendar (some of you may know it as Chinese New Year). I want to wish my TQS friends good health, happiness and prosperity as we approach the threshold of the Year of the Snake. To those who are facing challenges of one sort of another, may you find serenity on your path to an answer or solution. Thinking about us as quilters, there is a Chinese proverb that says something to the effect of "If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else." Through my association with you in this forum, I have found boundless help from fellow quilters; I hope this gives you happiness for a lifetime! Happy New Year! (Xin Nian Kuaile! or Gong Hei Fat Choy! in Cantonese)

Something I learnt a couple of years ago (when I also discovered that I was actually born in the year of the snake, rather than horse -birth date/new year sorting out) is that the chinese regard the snake as a little dragon, and something far nicer than we in the west, usually think of, when we think of snakes.

There are also differences whether you are a water snake, earth snake, fire snake, etcetera... but that is left to the astrologers because there are many factors involved in characterizing the kind of snake you are (please don't take that in the Western sense  ). In any event, for those of you who were born this year and turn sixty, traditionally, you become a senior and you are given the biggest birthday party (usually a formal banquet) with all your family and friends to celebrate the occasion in the biggest way!

Thank you for all the good wishes!

Well, thank you, Renata! And I hope you have a wonderful year as well. I had no idea it was the year of the snake. I have to admit that I've never been fond of snakes but maybe this year I'll see them in a different light.

Thank you! We had a really nice New Year's dinner at a local (brand new) Hong Kong style restaurant. Next week relatives start gathering at our house. New Year's, also known as Spring Festival lasts 15 days. The fifteenth day is known as Lantern Festival. This interval of time allows family and friends to travel, gather and celebrate together.

Ahhhh..... Rosemary is my little sister! I collect those Chinese animals in my little family. I'm a water dragon, my sons are a horse and a rooster, my granddaughter is a tiger, and grandchild number 2 (due in mid-August) will be a snake. My mother was a rat and my father was a rabbit.

When I spent some time in Hongkong and China (still married), I was asked everywhere what our signs are. Lots of nodding because apparently it's ok for a dragon mum to have horse and rooster kids, but when I said that my dh was a boar (pig ), there was always lots of shaking of heads and I was told: "Pig-man no good for dragon-woman!"..... They must have known something that I didn't at the time. Anybody knows a nice monkey or rat for me??

                        Happy Chinese New Year!

For anyone interested in what Lorchen is referring to and if you want to read more about your year and relationships it might be fun to peruse http://www.usbridalguide.com/special...pes/Dragon.htm -- of course all twelve animals are at this URL (I just opened it at Dragon.
