I thought Episode 5 was particularly interesting. I think that Maxwell L Anderson summed it up perfectly when he stated that the GB quilters seemed to anticipate what we think of as Modernism by about 20 years, both in terms of their use of colour and design. I was beginning to watch this episode when my DH came in and sat down beside me. I thought he would leave as soon as he realized that I was watching a programme about quilting but he was glued to the screen for the whole show. We were both gobsmacked by the GB quilts and we had a long discussion about it afterwards. What a stimulating programme it was. Thanks TQS for this wonderful gift.

I watched episode 7 of Why Quilts Matter yesterday and I just thought it was worth mentioning again that this is a really enjoyable series of programmes. They are very thought provoking.
Today I was thinking about the empowerment of women and needlework. Back in the 80's those of us who continued to do needlework were considered an oddity. Why would we want to do that when the Women's Liberation Movement freed us from the slavery of domesticity! Well the truth is because we were already free. We were exercising our freedom of expression as women have always done, by creating beauty in our homes. If you think about it, every single quilt that has ever been made by a woman has been a conscious act of creativity. Otherwise women would have taken two pieces of fabric stuffed them with wadding and tied them without any consideration for the aesthetic of the finished product. Not all quilts are great works of art but every single one is an expression of the makers creativity.
Thanks TQS for bringing this series of programmes to a wider audience.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I quilt because I love to do it. I love the materials, the tools, the process and the challenge. I quilt because I must and that's a passionate must. My family and I will keep quite warm, thank you, even if I never make another quilt. I've done more wall art in recent years but now I am doing bed quilts. I want to wrap up people I love and care about in work that I love. I believe quilting deserves the recognition it is getting in this documentary. I am glad of it, but for me it doesn't really matter. It is enough that I get to work at least a little bit almost every day on something I love. It's not everyone that can say that and for me I feel very rich because of it. And if you want to know what's even more wonderful, I guess you could say its the icing on the cake - and I do like my sweets, its being able to chat about it with all of you. Quilting is wonderful and the icing on the cake is the quilting community. Thanks everyone for being out there and connecting right here.
