    quilt shops/sewing machines

I am beginning to wish that quilt shops would just stick to quilting supplies and not include sewing machines. I was in a class with two other people at my LQS yesterday and the topic turned to sewing machines. The LQS sells a different make than the one I use and have used for years. I have felt pressure in the past to buy machines from them but I love my machine and don't need another. The owner proceeded to make negative comments about my brand and how hers actually makes the machines for all the other companies. She did make erroneous comments about mine. It got very uncomfortable. I want to go to the shop for quilting supplies and classes and not have to justify why I'm using a different sewing machine. She is a very nice person and has been very helpful to me but I don't want to have to feel apologetic when I don't buy from her. (BTW I did buy a machine for my frame and a small portable from her in the past, just not a regular machine. I didn't like the portable at all and am not impressed too much with the one I use for the frame.)
In class, we're supposed to use her machines instead of our own. The problem is, they don't all have the single stitch plate or the quarter inch foot and I'm not as familiar with them as I am my own.
Guess, I shouldn't let it bother me so much but I go there all the time and her husband is constantly telling me how their machines are the best and I feel pressured. I tell them I don't need another machine and don't have the money right now.
I know that if some quilting stores did not carry the machines there might not be another way for people to get a machine. I just wish they would accept that not everyone wants the same thing.

    Dear retiredgrandma5,
I think you stated your case very eloquently. How about having exactly that conversation with your LQS owner and her husband? Perhaps they are not aware how uncomfortable they are making you.
If, after your conversation, they continue to bully you ... then you've certainly learned something about whether they value your business. Good luck. Let us know how it works out for you.

I believe you are right, that I do have to a little more clear about my position. When the topic comes up,and it isn't just with me, I do say I can't afford it. It's hard to approach someone with a problem but I think I'm going to have to find an opening to do so when no one else is around. I don't think they're trying to be offensive. They think they're promoting their machines and don't realize how pushy and offensive it can be to some customers.

I would tell them I am happy with my personal machine. No problem. This is America after all and each individual has their own opinion.

I get what you mean. While I would love everyone to be happy with and purchase the brand of machine that I own I understand that we each have different needs and can afford different things. As a teacher while I would prefer you use the machines that are in class (I have a better shot at figuring out what's not going well) I don't mind if you bring your machine because you're going to work on your machine at home, not the one in class.

For a shop owner to talk up their machines, that's their job. To disparage another brand...I have a bit of a problem with that. I'm all for brand loyalty however don't disparage another company, its just not good form.

You stated your case here very well. Please have a chat with them. It will help all of you understand the importance of respecting other peoples decisions and preferences.

I think I would tell them I will use their machines when they are given to me for ZERO DOLLARS. But them I am getting crabby in my old age.

I definitely would tell them that there constant pressure tactics are not appreciated. Say it nicely but firmly. I think they will get the hint.
