How I organized my sewing room

I too was lucky enough to get build a new house. Room is 20' x 27' with storage closets at each end. 4 doors cover each closet and move side to side on two tracks. They do double work as they are also my design walls. Behind the doors are plastic bins (with air holes) for fabric by color or fabric by projects. Each bin is labeled. Now, that was not enough storage space and I just couldn't seem to get everything put away, so our Son turned in the attic space behind the closets into storage area. In this area I have a wire basket system. Just store more fabric there and on the top of the baskets there is a shelf where I have binders of magazines and class print-outs form QU. In the big room I have two sewing tables, one big board ironing station and a cutting area. Room for a computer, printers and scanner, a TV and a couch. That pretty much fills it all up.
My main problem keeping it neat and tidy. One would think with all this storage space that would be easy, but I think I am afraid to put something away less I forget about it and not finish it... LOL
I don't think I will live long enough to finish all I have started.

I made mine out of melamine and I am not sure that was the best material. It worked and I love it but I made my table very large and I think it would have been better to use a wood frame and plywood with a veneer finish. The reason: the melamine is a pressed particle type product and while it will take a screw--it is not as strong as it would be if it had a more solid make up. I don't know if this makes sense to you but that is what I found. ritzyOriginally posted by HAPPYCAMPBELLWhat is the best material to make a sewing table out of I'am looking to make one after the first of the yearHappy Quilting,

Do you want a sewing table for sitting at the machine, or for cutting/etc.? For a cutting/work table, my dad made my mom and her sister tables out of old bed-rail angle iron (he can weld but I don't see why they couldn't be screwed together) and they are strong but relatively light (the top is celotex or whatever that bulletin-board material is so it can be pinned into--it's covered with durable canvas). You could make it any size. Plus, you can put your storage drawers underneath and put wheels on it. They aren't foldable, however. If I didn't live in a small apartment, I'd ask him to make me one, too...

OK, I took the easy way out, and like it alot! I love re-using old items in different ways. Someone was tossing an old solid desk, which was just loose in one leg, so we tightened it and now it works. It has 3 standard drawers on the left, two on the right (one is a filing drawer), and two pull-out flat areas over each top drawer for more room. It is perfect for sewing, and I have it right next to the cutting table (used old conference 8 x 4 ft table on casters to raise it). Bookcases, old wicker chairs, old tall dresser, stained glass lightbox, all work too! An old floor lamp, 2 narrow folding tables, some lined baskets, old tins all help.

My husband has his office in our home and me made his own desk out of formica that he ordered cut to his specific requirements. He mounted a strip of wood on the wall at one end for support and uses a couple of file cabinets for support as well. They cut holes for his computer cords and such. This is our plan for my future ( :!: ) sewing room. I plan on having a hole cut to reset the machine and we'll get some basic kitchen type cupboards for the ends. It's not very expensive and you get to pick the exact size.
I'm using The Ultimate Quilting Station from JoAnn's for cutting and it's wonderful. It has 3 large drop leaves that I leave up and on one side, 3 drawers, the other, a door with shelves inside. The top is gridded with lines but I keep a cutting mat there anyway. It's on wheels. I got it on sale for about $100 but the box weighed 100 pounds and it took us 1 hour to assemble. It wasn't hard at all.
