Will you make me a quilt?

I made a picture quilt and I put $500.00 or more into making a family quilt top You're absolutely right it cost "alot" in buying all the materials needed along with all the ink that is needed. Though I learnt quickly on how to make my own fabric sheets for printing photos. I made two photo quilts.

I sorta of had the same line pulled on me once, DH step mom
Asked me if I wouldquilt 4-5 quilt tops of her Mother inlaw
which is my DH step mom asking me to quilt his grand mothers Granny's quilt tops.
followed by saying;
I can have it done for $75.00 "I'm like you better jump right on that deal"!!! Because I won't quilt any that cheap!Now these we're unfinished quilt tops of my DH grandmother, He
was never offered a quilt of his grandmothers though I was suppose to quilt them,yeah right...I DON'T THINK SO.
I think that takes alot of nerve. If things are done with in the correct manner she could of had those quilts quilted free no charge because I Loved Granny,we we're close. I couldn't even imagine what Granny thought on this one! (( lets say she wouldn't have been happy and she wouldn't have done it either if she we're me))I'm a really good person but if you cross me wrong in a bad manner than you shall recieve nothing in return.


Then my DH came home one day and says another (friend) asked me to ask you if you would make her a nice quillow like the one I had made for another friend ,they saws hers and liked it alot and now wants one like hers. Yeah, right I think our dear friend just asked the wrong person!!! Okay,I had made the other friends mother one also because she asked me if I would for Xmas,she offered to pay but I wouldn't take her money,a friend. Though,Here is the thank you I recieved,"a note on my 360 page" was it!!! No call.

Quilting is a Labor of Love,
Alot of Heart & Soul put into each quilt and I don't take it lightly in my receivers as any thing less than what I have given them.
(( quilts should be appreciated and welcomed with Love ))

Don't ask my DH to put you on my quilting list!!! :shock:

You dodged a bullet!!! If they come back to hubby with another offer, tell them you've got XX projects lined up and they'd have to get in line.

i was explaining this all to my mom who started quilting with me and we have taken classes together and such. my first quilts were 2 i spy quilts for my neice and nephew that mom and i did together. i had said to her that i quilt for my pleasure and if i want to give someone a gift that is fine but you don't ask for a gift (by the way i also dislike gift regesteries for the same reason) so anyway as i am telling her this i said that i have to like someone alot to make a quilt for them. and she looks at me and said you have never made me a quilt. now anyone who knows me knows how much i love my mom we are the best of friends and more but i looked at her and said you can make one yourself. everytime i offer to make or give her something she tells me that i don't have to or that she has no space in the camper for it. but in a way i have worked on a quilt for her she is making a queen size nine patch altering with plain squares of muslum. and i crawled on my knees downstairs layering and basting the thing together. and i helped her pick fabric for it.

also katz i have done 4 photo quilts as of right now how do you use your own fabric on the i spies we put pics of the family on it and mom used a product called bubble jet but i like the quality of the pics using the printer fabric in the stores best so far but i am up to new ideas because i think chris' dad would like one after he saw the one i made his mom last christmas.

I make my own fabric printing sheets out of freezer paper cut the exact same size that my printer will allow,ironed onto a muslin "Starched" fabric. then I send it through the printer. Don't remove paper until you have printed out the photo. I heat set photo with my iron then I soak the photo fabric with a teaspoon of vinegar to set ink more for 10-15 minutes. Throw into dryer, then iron fusiable web onto fabric so I can iron my photo to other squares.Then I sew a decortive stitch around my photo.
It works great,and saves abit of money.

I recently discovered that C. Jenkins has a product almost never found in quilt stores: Bubble Jet Set for Hewlett Packard printers. Their regular Bubble Jet Set 2000 is really made for Canon and Epson-type inkjet printers. HP uses a different ink formulation and it doesn't work as well with the regular BJS 2000. I had been frustrated with the results of BJS labels over the past couple of years and had reverted to the (much more expensive) Printed Treasures. They work well, but you have to use white backgrounds for your printing, which I found limiting for my quilt labels. I wanted to use my own, matching fabric, so needed to find a BJS-type product that worked with my HP printer with Vivera inks. So I emailed the contact at C. Jenkins, and he recommended the HP BJS.

The only place I have found the HP BJS is online at the Jenkins website: http://www.cjenkinscompany.com/Bubbl...t_2000_s/3.htm

I used this with a couple of recent quilt labels, and it worked great.

Beth - I am curious - What is Vivera Ink?? What kind of printers do you use it in?? Can it be used in a regular size printer or is it used only in large format printers??
I have heard very little about it and have been thinking about getting a large format printer so I can print my photos on larger pieces of fabric.

"Vivera ink" is the type (probably a manufacturer's name) used in many modern HP inkjet printers. I love the color and the way it makes photos, but those inks don't do as well on fabric.

If you have one of these printers, you know it because "Vivera" is plastered all over the printer and the ink cartricges.

Thank you Beth. I will keep that in mind when I'm looking for a printer. I have been a member from the beginning but have just recently found the forums and chat. What a wonderful way to learn new things!!!
Gotta go so I can watch the new show and see another way to do my flower photos on fabric!! This is a new day for learning!!

I always tell them, "Sure, but the fabric alone will cost around $250, and the labor will be at least $1000........" That shuts 'em up!
Regarding what people do with the quilts you give them -- I decided, early on, that I'd only give quilts to people I knew would appreciate the time and effort it took to make it, and would take care of it in a reasonable manner. Exceptions to this are charity quilts (Project Linus, etc.), but these are simple quilts & usually tied.
I make my "gift" quilts with the expectation that they will be used (i.e., not put away as an heirloom), but tell the recipient that if they decide they don't want it, to return it to me rather than use it as something to change the car's oil on!

I not only get asked to make people a quilt......I have been handed old rag quilts to be finished. I have also been asked to hem pants, repair home linens, make prom dresses, make bridesmaids dresses, etc. I have so many quilt projects that I want to make, who has time to sew so many other things that aren't even fun to do. I do tell people quilting and sewing is a personal hobby, purely for my personal pleasure. I am not for sale.

Last person who asked me to make a quilt for them got this reply. I will make the quilt and keep track of my hours. Let's say 1000 hours. Then you will come to my house and clean, toilets and all, for an equal number of hours. Then we will be even. No takers. Betty Ann in stormy Florida
