In anticipation of Ricky's lessons I watched his Kool Kaleidoscope show 403 from way back when.
I thought I had seen most all of the quilt shows but I don't remember this one. It looks like it is going to
be a really fun class. HelenW
Helen, thank you for sharing the show number! I'd planned on using fat quarters from the Long Time Gone contemporary bundle along with other yardage, but have since learned fat quarters won't work for Kool Kaleidoscope...hmm, I might just have to shop local, or from stash or order from TQS...terri s.

Terri, I was wondering how small you would have to go to use fat quarters for this project. On the Show 403 Ricky based his
wedges on a square that was 18 inches. That uses the width of the fabric to get 6 copies of a template. If you made your
square 9 inches, that would be half. Half of the width of a fabric on a bolt is a fat quarter. To get the 2 identical strip sets you
would cut your fat quarters in half lengthwise and lay one on top of the other then cut the strips. I was thinking I might play around with some paper templates to see if it was even possible. Just curious. HelenWHelenW
HelenW, I'm interested in what you find out. I watched Show 403 and I am interested in making a smaller version. The 18" square Pattern makes a 36" square quilt (before border) so 9" pattern should make 18" square quilt. I think that is what I will try to make. Sandy
Sandy, I drew up a 9 inch template. Divided it the same way Ricky did on the show. Cut the pieces apart. Number 3 seemed to be
the biggest so I made 6 of them and laid it on the paper representing a fat quarter. It looks like it would have enough room and making sure you had at least 1/2 inch between pieces for the seam allowances. The strip set could be about 5 or 6 inches wide.
There might be some aspects I am not thinking of, since I have not done this process before. HelenW
Helen, You are wonderful. I think I am going smaller, as in 9", for this project. I like the fact that you don't really know what your quilt is going to look like until you get it on the board. Sandy
Sandy, A couple things to think about. I made up a full size template for 18 inch finished size in EQ8. The "nose" section is really quite small. You could draw your lines farther out to make it longer, but since the width is 30 degrees, it will not get any wider. That means
a bunch of seams all coming together with that little template piece. I have done enough Judy Neimeyers to know it can get real
frustrating. Maybe find a center fabric that can do some of the work for you. I had a scrap of this multicolor fabric in lines that would work if I had enough. The other thing I was thinking was to sew 1/4 inch seams then trim them down to 1/8 inch for the strip sets.
Another thing I was thinking was to put steam a seam on an 1/2 inch wide strip the length of a fat quarter and and fuse it to another
strip and edge stitch. That would eliminate the seam. Just thinking right now. HelenWLast edited by Helen W.; 07-26-2021, 10:24 AM.HelenW

testing photo size My first 2 attempts were rejected with different ways of measuring size. I sure get confused on how to upload a decent size clear photo on this site. My 3rd attempt was accepted but that was readjusting the size of the rejected size each time, so I have no idea how I got to what was finally accepted. HelenW.HelenW
