I enjoyed Dee's introduction to Kona Cotton 2025 BOM. When she said the blocks were 18 inches but you could make them
smaller I was thinking, this would be the perfect opportunity to try out mini mosaic technique by Paula Doyle. So I drew up
6 inch blocks and plan to give it a try. Paula had a show (2307) with one segment about mini mosaic and she has a classroom segment
under LEARN. I drew up the first block and plan to use scrap fabric with a black background. I drew the blocks in EQ8 and just used
the solid colors to make the mock up blocks. I plan to do Laurel Ridge BOM when the Marcus fabrics come out
in the spring that I want to use. So right now I am just making a few sample blocks to learn Lynn and Barbara
recommended techniques. HelenWHelenW

Made my first 2 little blocks. Having a bit of a problem not cutting points off. The 6 inch blocks sure are cute. HelenW

Change of plans; trying an applique idea. It is the picture on the right. I knew someday I would use
some of those small scraps of fabric I always save.Last edited by Helen W.; 01-11-2025, 08:39 AM.HelenW

It took me a while to find my box of Kona cottons since I had to move them so that I could decorate for Christmas. I also found some Konas in a box with no label - I can't remember for which project they were for but I think they are perfect for this quilt.
(See Pictures Below)
The first thing I did was copy the pattern and enlarged it-easier to see and make notes on it. I was orginally go to resize it to 9" squares (half-sized) but some of the pieces were too small for my liking, so I decided to resize the blocks to 12". I orginally was going to use different colors of gray for the background but instead I am going to use the gray layer cake. I am, though, going to make the sashing black. Finally, I think I am going to face the quilt using Joe Cunningham's technique. I have never faced a quilt before, so this should be interesting to see how it comes out.

Thanks Lynnanne, It is a fun little distraction since I can't start the Laurel Ridge until the fabrics come out that I want
to use. It will probably be early summer. Plan to make the quilt the 62 inch size that Barbara Black posted on her blog.
In the mean time I am working on another BOM by Bonnie Sullivan called Folk Art Sampler. I change some of the stuff
in the blocks to give it a little more country look. HelenWHelenW

I'm behind but here are my first 2 blocks assembled. It was so much fun sorting through the 365 Kona colors in the kit!!
I'm using rainbow colored butterfly and confetti prints on black grounds for some of the pieces. I decided to use flying geese construction in some places to facilitate using larger segments of the patterned fabrics. I "focused cut" (a.k.a. fussy cut) the butterfly print.
My thought is that the rainbow colors in the prints will carry pops of color throughout to tie together the different palettes of the blocks.

I decided not to use the neutral colors that were in the Kona palettes for April and May. Instead I selected cyan blue colors for April and yellow green to green colors for May. I think they relate better to the colors in the confetti and butterfly prints than the original gray and tan colors from the kit for those months.

Here are my blocks #6 June, #7 July, and #8 August. #6 I used warm yellow to orange hues, #7 I used red orange and warm red hues, #8 I used cool red hues (includes pink)

Alice FOriginally posted by [email protected] View PostHere's my work on Block 9 September and 10 October. Block 9 is more red purple (warmer purples) and block 10 is purple to blue purple (cooler purples).
What fabulous blocks you have made. I love, love, love them. Can't wait to see your finished quilt. I started off strong but when back to a UFO ( Hook Line and Sinker) to finish it up.
Just one more border to make on it and I will be able to this project.

Helen W, Beautiful work! I really like the combination of embroidery panels and pieced blocks. The different size and shaped embroidery panels are very interesting! I'm new to traditional quilting and hadn't seen work like this before. I found Crabapple Hill's website and videos for crayon and colored pencil tinting. Looks like fun! I'm inspired to try this with some of my own line drawings; combining them with pieced blocks. Thanks for sharing!
