OMG! No topics in the Dyeing Tools forum

Hey folks! Everything is a dyeing tool. When I strap on the rubber gloves and go to town, anything I can put my hands on becomes a tool, clothes pins, rubber bands, twine, handheld electric mixer, wire clothes hangers, balled up tin foil etc.

All of these items help me to create texture in my dyed fabrics. I am now playing around with dipping dyed fabrics in very diluted fabric paints to get deeper dimension and other interesting effects.

Come on out dyers, let's get some conversation started!

so glad to see someone post here. I would love to be a dyer or whatever the name is but I live in a small house and a motorhome and have little space for dying. I would love to have suggestions for what I can do in small spaces and public laundries. So send me some hints. I really want Justin to do a DVD on dying fabric because I know he has techniques for one yard at a time. Hey Justin Help me out. Ann

          Jim,
Right now I am using Setacolor (yes I know it's a paint and not a dye) to paint fabric for a quilt. My DH built me a 12 foot by 12 foot wall out if foam insulation to pin it to. It is hanging in the garage and I am airbrushing it with five different colors. Pictures will be in a blog shortly, probably tomorrow. I made a first pass figuring that if it was too light I could go back and add more color but if it was too dark I couldn't take color out. So now I need to go back and add more color to it.

Oh boy I am looking forward to lots of neat stuff on this thread. I am ready to learn about dying fabric and need to read what you all have to say....I even ordered and received some pfd fabric about 3 weeks ago and it is waiting in my stash for just the right inspiration to come along....So Jim...inspire me....inspire all of us!

Yes, please! A year ago, I ordered a whole set plus metallics Paintstiks (I always go overboard). And I haven't used one yet, didn't even dabble one bit. I have the book and some rubbing thingies. I just need to be taken by the hand and guided in their use. Please, Justin or Jim!!

I just found a recent post online that Michael's has Setacolor & Luminere on 50% because they are discontinuing them. Roadtrip today.

                  Especially for Ann. -
You might want to check out the December/January 2009 issue of Quilting Arts magazine. There was an article by Judy Coates Perez on using RIT dyes (safe and easy to use as opposed to dyes that require all sorts of safety equipment). The best part about using a dye like RIT is that you can heat-set it in your microwave oven! If you try this, let us know how it works for you.

I began dyeing my own fabric about a year ago and am a total dye junkie. I usually dye in batches of 3 yards, but have often done as little as 1/2 yard in baggies. There is a website that has excellent instructions for baggie dyeing (see below). This is a great and easy way to get started. "Color by Accident" is a great book if you are just beginning. You really don't need much space. I do all my work in a slop sink in my laundry room and use plastic bins for the dye process. It couldn't be simpler and the results are always a bit of a surprise. It's great fun and the possibilities are endless. Deb

                      Hi Deb
Your quilts are gorgeous! Did you hand-dye the rainbow fabric in your first rhapsody? Dang, if you can do that in a laundry tub that's amazing.

Sue -- the rainbow fabric is one of Ricky's commercial fabrics, which is beautiful, but not hand dyed. The rest are all my hand dyes. I still considered myself very much a novice and am just beginning to experiment with color combining. -- Deb
