Three more floaters after star border

While I am working on what fabric to use for my floaters, I have a question regarding add the last 3 floater strips. Wouldn't we need to wait to add the very last floater strip to make sure our flying geese border in November fits? I try very hard to cut, sew and press as accurate as possible, but I have this feeling the flying geese border won't fit perfectly.

By the way, great information on how to fix uneven star borders - my 2 shorter star borders are 1/2 inch different from each other.

That's what I was thinking too but I'm doing a different border instead of the flying geese and mitering my floaters so will be piecing my next border first before adding any of these.

I was wondering the same thing. The only reason I can think of for this is that since there are 3 floater strips, you want #1 and #3 to be the same width for symmetry. But I'm not sure how I'm going to get the flying geese to fit when it comes to the next border...

I asked Sue about this. She says that she will give hints for easy adjustments that can be made to the flying geese to make them fit. She said that would be easier than adjusting these floaters.

Sue's directions next month for the flying geese border includes patterns for more paper pieceing as well as directions for the "bikini" method of making flying geese units.

There are LOTS of ways to make flying geese units. You just need to find one that works for you!

I used Sue's templates for the paper piecing method and the dimensions were just right! However, I recently learned about a tool that looks like a great way to make these units, but I haven't tried it yet.

          Check it out here:

Margo, I have used that ruler many times for flying geese units, and was how I was planning on doing mine for the BOM. I love that they are no waste! You can make 4 units in no time, and with assembly line, you can make enough for that border in just a twinkle!

Maggie and Margo, I have thought about buying that ruler. Maggie it is nice to know that it works. Do you think I can buy it at the Houston Show or do I need to just order it on line? Thanks, PaulaN

Paula, there's a good chance that you could find it in Houston and save shipping costs, but if you don't you can order it on-line when you get home.

I have the Flying Geese x 4 ruler, which appears to work the same way as Kaye Wood's. It is certainly the same method for constructing flying geese -- which, incidentally, works GREAT.

                  Are they the same product?

Since we are talking about the final 3 floater strips for Oct., I see Sue says the quilt center, after adding the floaters should be 63 1/2" - which means from what she gives for strip measurements that before the floaters, the quilt center should be 60.5" right? Well somehow, mine is at 61" (which I guess isn't too bad) before the floaters, so I am going to adjust accordingly.

Just wondering if anyone else found their centre before the floaters was also off a bit?! Other then that, I love how perfectly the star border went together and onto the quilt centre - Sue's instructions and "formulas" are wonderful!

I finished Oct. BOM - so to speak, borders are on, but I only put on 1 floater, as time runs out on me, as we leave for Austin/Houston tomorrow morning. I will post the picture on show and tell.

Pat, you are definitely not alone having to adjust for the star border, but isn't it amazing how well Sue's floaters help us all make everything fit together! I've learned a LOT with this project!
