Sue gives us templates to make all of the half-square-triangle (HST) units with paper piecing as large groups of like colors. Those are then cut apart and re-arranged to form the blocks, so it's not paper piecing like the feathered star where what you sew is what you get! Does that make sense? I don't think you could make the sampler blocks or the sawtooth stars with the fabric foundation method, but I've never tried it, so I'm not sure how it works.

Guess sewing onto muslin is the same as sewing on paper except you can not remove the muslin
If the edges are fabric cut on a bias it is helpful to do the piecing on muslin. Or if paperpiecing, Leave the paper on. Only remove the paper thats enclosed...like you will do on a Grandma-quilt. Hmmm...think I need to get out my dictionary again ops:
What do you do Margo?? Leaving the paper on all outer edges??

I am soooo excited about the 2009 BOM. I had promised myself that I wouldn't start until the Christmas decorations were down and put away and the house was back in order, but......I did print out the overall instructions and the instructions for the feather star block. I have paper pieced before using Carol Doak's method, so I feel that it will go smoothly. However, I must thank you, Margo, for the information about changing the printer setting. That sample square was not a full inch square and using your instructions I was able to correct it. Not something I would have been able to figure out myself! So.....my goal for today is to tackle the Christmas decorations. Then tomorrow I will be in quilter's heaven working on my first block. I can hardly wait! I guess I am feeling all the excitement that everyone else is feeling with this new venture. Good luck to all and be sure to post your blocks!

I am going to use Jinny Beyer's method - I will break the middle star block into 9 squares and make a template for each different shaped piece, drawing around onto the fabric with pencil to give me a stitching line. I'll work by hand - I think it will be time consuming but I like to sew by hand best - I haven't tried paper piecing before.

I can't wait to get started!
I have to baby quilts to make yet (both ladies due in march). I just have to put the border on the first top and finish cutting the second one, and layer and quilt both...now that I think about it maybe I'll cheat and do the Feathered Star before I quilt them. ops:

I will just have to think of the extra money that I can use for my addiction, er, habit!

I just ordered my fabric last week so I'm still waiting. Plus I have to be up & out early on the 1st for the Super Bowl Sale.
But come to think of it, February is a short month so I'll have to work fast once my fabric arrives. I ordered the kit after much debating in my mind. Getting really anxious!!
