Thank you for this list. My fabrics are literally overflowing their storage containers (I bet I'm not the only one with this problem) so I'm going to do my best to mostly use fabrics from my stash and not buy much new.

This list will make it easier to go through all my boxes and make selections so I know what, if any I still may need to buy. I appreciate it.

I've never done a BOM before, but this is just to beautiful not to make. I'm excited.

I don't have a lot of yardage in my stash, mostly fat quarters. So, I just ordered BOM fabrics that require the big yards, like the background one and inserts. I am now committed to next years BOM. YIKES!!! I will probably have a million questions, need several shoulders to cry on and whine to. I am looking forward to joining this group very much. Sandi in FL

The 6 1/2 yards of background fabric...it is the backing of the quilt isnt it?? Not the background of the pieces themselves?? Hmmmm....I may have to order some fabric  Think I will do this BOM

Brink, the background fabric is for the background of the blocks. The fabric requirements didn't give the amounts for the backing (back of quilt). The binding amount is given, though. Go back to the first page of this thread and look at what Margo said about the background fabric. The amount will depend on whether you are going to make a scrappy quilt or a controlled fabric/color quilt. Hope this helps. Judy in Torrance

Glad you will be joining us Hanne-Grete! The 6-1/2 yards is the background for a lot of the pieced blocks. It doesn't all have to be the same fabric, but it will probably work better if all of the backgrounds are a similiar VALUE. You want a definite dark/light contrast so that all the piecing you will be doing will show up!!! See how well the feathered star in the center shows up against the light background? Keep that in mind as you plan your colors. The background doesn't have to be light....it just has to contrast with the other fabrics. It's going to be a lot of fun to see the fabrics that everyone comes up with!

Thank you Margo..but it just seemed the sq yardage for the background was way out of porpotions even for a background fabric  I could cover my livingroom/bedsoom/sewingroom/office in Bodoe with that abount of yardage    I will do it the scrappy batik way I guess and only buy the background fabric :P

Are the colors in the 2009 BOM kit you can purchase online similar to the ones used in the demo quilt?

I went to the store yesterday and tried to get some fabric but there wasn't enough of a description of the fabrics required to help me. Is there going to be a better explanation for those of us who are a little challenged? I'm used to the instructions that tell you what you need and refer to the design (e.g. assorted medium/dark blue prints = 3.375 yards).

The colors in the 2009 BOM kit are the same fabrics that Sue used in her original quilt and the directions have photos showing you exactly which fabrics she used where. However, the quilt lends itself well to a scrappy arrangement, or any other idea you may have.

The yardages are somewhat vague because Sue knew that there would be a lot of variation in how people put it together. If you feel like you need to know ahead of time exactly what fabrics you will be using, you might want to consider purchasing the kit. If you are doing your own thing, you might want to start with about four fat quarters and plenty of background fabric.

Like any BOM, the fun comes when you see all the ways that one pattern can be changed to reflect each quilter. Having made one already, I can tell you that I was still making fabric choices towards the end of the process and had a wonderful time exploring all the possibilities. It was a great learning experience for me!

The fabric that I'm going to use has a white background with the bright pinks, oranges, and greens. I thought the background could be a white on white. I don't use much white and I'm wondering if it would be too contrasty (is that a word?) It seems to me it could be a bit overwhelming. What do you all think? Gloria
