Questions for Sarah--Month 5
Sarah,
could you provide a little clarification on the stitch length for doing the Y-seam that you explain in your video? Is it alright to use 2.5 stitch length on those seams as opposed to the shorter stitch length that was used for the paper piecing part. I ask because you are still stitching through paper or some sort of stabilizer there. I'm using Carol Doak paper which is working splendidly and I suspect it would do well even with a longer stitch length than 1.5-1.9. What is the better stitch length to connect the blocks?
Thanks,
Renata

Hi, Mellymoo!Originally posted by mellymooHi Renata
I too am using Carol Doak's paper. How did you manage inserting the circles into the background peice ? I found the paper to be a little stiff and could not manipulate the peice, eventually I removed it. Have you got any suggestions?
I agree with you that the paper is a little stiff to put under your presser foot and keep everything together. However, I took some thread and basted the circle in by hand making sure that I put the needle in on the line on both sides, removing the pins as I went along. This allowed me to make sure that I had everything in place smoothly before I went to the sewing machine. Then I placed the piece under the sewing machine needle and stitched around the circle on the basting line with a stitch length of 3.0. My paper is still on and was just fine. The pins were actually getting in the way and not keeping the piece nicely together. Does that make sense? Let me know how things work out for you.
Cheers,
Renata

If you have stay stitched I see no reason to leave the paper in. At least take it out in the seam allowance. It is a big chore to try to sew with all that paper in the way. You will have to remove it at some point, so it might as well be when it makes your sewing easier. I agree that basting and removing the pins also helps.

Hi Sarah
Just wanted to let you know, that all is well. Got through Month 3 once I changed Template # 2. I've been sick with a cold, so have had plenty of time to catch up. Now working on Month 5. Thanks so much for your help. I haven't put my pieces together yet. I'm waiting for Auriful thread to arrive, so I can do the blanket stitch on the triangle block. Having lots of fun now LOL!
